So what does the ear ringing/head buzz thing all about. Part of the healing process (bug killing). I'm on Zitromax & bicillin. I've heard the Zithro can cause this reaction. Appreciate any experiences.

Hi PhilC..

If you hold a paper cup up to your ear and cover it lightly the buzzing will actually come in clearer and you will be able to hear them. Who? Why the spirochetes, of course! Since you just started the antibiotics you are hitting them good. The buzzing noise is them screaming and shouting as they run rampant and go around and around "kicking the buckets"!

Sorry..couldn't help myself...Forgive me?

As Josie said...it can be part of the Lyme. It can also be part of the herx you are getting ready to have. ?? It could also be blood pressure. Have you checked yours lately...since the ringing/buzzing started? Might want to...

It MIGHT help to use an ice pack on the back of your neck and jaws for a while. The noise is annoying but will go away. If there is any pain or you get worse...get it checked please. This is my opinion only...as you know.

I checked several sources for side effects of Zithromax and did not see any mention about ringing in ears...but that does not mean it can't happen.. And DUH...I forgot to check the bicillian...sorry. I will if you would like me too.

So...look at it as a good thing...the spirochete theme song! Die you little bugs die!

I had awful tinnitus for a year non-stop and it went away with extended tx- was there pre-abx- BUT it can also be a sign of a systemic yeast infection so make sure you are taking enough acidophlius!!!

The ears ringing and major head buzz have been predominant Lyme symptoms for me, from the beginning.....
Ive been on abx for about 5 weeks now I think and they are still the big thing, along with confusion, brain fog and vertigo... Doc said yesterday may take awhile to pass but the treatment will eventually clear it up...good luck!

Hi PhilC,

You said "any experiences" so can I tell you mine? My ear ringing/buzzing is aggravated by computer usage. Also by pesticide exposure. Being at the baseball field (covered with pesticides) is having a bad effect on my lyme too (increased pain & heart symptoms).

Lots of us experience increased sensitivity in hearing, sight, touch and taste. The increased hearing makes me sometimes hear loud buzzing and it's from the refrigerator three rooms away or the neighbor's outside night light buzzing. Be careful about listening to loud music. I think our ears can be damaged alot easier and ear ringing can also be a sign of damage to the ear drum.

Just wanted to mention the computer thing as I know alot of us spent time online researching and talking back and forth. If you have this - you'll notice it's alot worse after extended time online.

Everyone is not affected this way but I thought you might want to be aware.

Tinnitus (ear ringing - not sure if that's spelled right) is also a sign of drug toxicity so it's always a good idea to let your doc know of this symptom.

And then, sometimes, (probably most of the time) it's just the Lyme.

PhilC,

I was on Zithromax 1200 mg/day for 10 months.
After about 4 months, I developed a buzzing in my ear that sounded like a chainsaw at a low volume. It also seemed like it was harder to hear (maybe hearing thru all that noise was the problem! :-)
I ignored it for a few more months, until it appeared that the Zith stopped working. I started another antibiotic, and the noise disappeared almost instantly.

BTW, Pfizer does make reference to it in their drug info - "Special Senses: Hearing disturbances including hearing loss, deafness, and/or tinnitus, rare reports of taste perversion."

You may also find this information in a PDR.

Hello Anita!

I am glad you found the source for PhilC. I had thought I had seen it but couldn't find it! So...I figured it might have been my immagination? I just didn't look hard enough...I am guilty.

Could you post the site for me so I will have it next time! Just in case I forget again? This old Lyme brain...aaahhhh! Thanks so much!

Hi Tincup,

I found another Zithromax & hearing reference here: http://www.aidsinfonyc.org/network/access/drugs/azit.html

The quote in my post above came directly from Pfizer's materials, which are in Adobe PDF format. Here's the URL:
http://www.pfizer.com/hml/pi's/zithromaxoralpi.pdf

The quote is on page 17 and appears to be made in reference to pediatric treatment. (I wouldn't let that give me a false sense of security, though!)

Anita...good work! Thanks so much! I took Zithro for 6 months so you would figure I could remember that! I do appreciate your effort. I will file it with my "good brain". Take care of you!

PhilC- Good luck with the treatment!

Ear ringing has been a long-time symptom for me....since before ever starting Zithromax. It didn't get any better or any worse on Zithromax. I have the head buzz thing, too.

the ear ringing is from the zithromax, its a side effect of the drug, dont worry it goes away when you stop taking it...
