I have had problems with my eyes for the last few years of having Lyme. I have often noticed that my eyes are more uncomfortable when i am on Doxy within my pulsing regime. I always suffer photophobia & need to wear dark glasses & a hat in anything more than dull light.
I posted on my usual forum & got a reply saying that using abx could worsen the effects of Lyme associated eye conditions.
Bpeck, was it you that answered me?

I have always got treatment for problems in order of priority & my eyes were low on the list compared to renal, Heart & TIA problems.
Now i am worried that i should have done something before & may have caused permanent damage by putting up with the symptoms.
My Opthalmologist has noted high pressures before & i do have trouble seeing definition. I need to use large fonts & can't focus on black print very well as it jumps about.
My main symptoms though are general soreness, stabbing pains when i move my eyes to look at something & a hot needle sensation through the middle of the eye.

I don't know who to tell about this. If it is optic neuritis, do i need to tell my neurologist? If it's Uveitis, should i tell my opthalmologist or my GP? i'm not sure what to do about it but i know that there has been a big change in what i can see, over the last few months.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Best wishes,
W.

Hello:

It may have been me that answered your other post. I usually reply to eye posts, as I've had a myriad of problems wih my eyes due to Lyme.

A good tissue penetrating abc xan cause increased inflammation in the eye. So, if you think Doxy is causing them to worsen (Doxy doen't penetrate the eye as well as Minocycline or Rifampin) then GO SLOW.

I think my stabbing pains were eye muscle inflammation as they always preceeded Red Eye. I also had dry eyes, a very high immune cell count within the vitreous (Uveitis) plus central vision problems, flashing lights, and a shimmering of the lateral periferal visual field.

I used Terraymycin (made by Pfizer) which is tetracycline and polymixin B in an oinment base every night for about 5 months. Then I moved to CAN-C which is a Russian antioxidant eye drop (n-acetyl carnosine) used in leiu of cataract surgery.

You should probably get a complete eye exam by an Ohpthalmologist,.. Then you can go from there.

My eyes were the hardest symptom to treat, as they always got worse when I used a good oenetrating abx (or combo) which was effective on my other symptoms.

Good luck,
Barb
