Went to my dentist today to have a small cavity bonded. While he was back there on my upper molar he said ha could remove the mercury amalgum filling and replace it with a bond. Why? I dont Know! But I thought to my self, less mercury in my mouth is good right? He started drilling and 2 seconds later I rinsing mercury out of my mouth...SHEEESH!!!! I asked him about the dangers of this. He said that the mercury is bonded (like an alloy with another metal) and would in no way harm my body. If I did happen to swallow some of that mercury slurry he made in my mouth, it would just pass through my system. He also said that every study he has read indicated no negative effects of mercury amalgums in your teeth! For some reason I find this hard to believe and am sad I let him drill that baby out.

Would it have been better to keep the filling in my mouth for ever or just have it drilled out and never worry about it again?

FYI, I have 3 other fillings in my mouth, all mercury amalgum.

Is there anything I can/should do now if this was a bad choice? Should I start detoxing!?!?!

I believe that most of my health problems, including the chronic nature of my lyme (messed up immune system) are due to a lifetime of dental mercury. Can you imagine the pandemonium, the lawsuits that would be filed if the ADA ever allowed its members to say anything other than amalgam fillings are perfectly safe?

My immune system and cognitive functioning had been on the downslide for years, but went downhill rapidly after I had 3 teeth capped within a few months of each other, all of which had amalgams in them. I breathed and swallowed the dust.

I located a "biological dentist" who used the "Huggins Protocol" to safely remove the rest of my mercury fillings (well, I have one left). It was expensive (he doesn't take insurance), but so well worth it.

Do a search for GiGi's posts on dental issues. She has the facts straight.

Good luck,

Sue

Edited to add, for your safety and best results, do NOT start detoxing (chelating) until all of the mercury is out of your mouth and your detox pathways (liver, kidney function) had been checked by a naturopath.

the material you spit into the cuspitdor was not mercury. mercury is a liquid at room temperature what you spit out was solid.it was an alloy of silver and mercury together to form a new coumpound.if you mix an acid and base together you get water & salt ,which are in no way similar to the original compounds.
this article shows the other side of the coin. I was a dentist 23 years drilling out thousands of amalgams, working with free amalgam, and my tox screen for heavy metals is normal, as is almost all dentists.if dentists don't have high mercury levels then how can you get high mercury levels from a couple of amalgams in your mouth the are bonded to form a new alloy.
i am not for amalgams but your theories don't pan out. there are other ways to get high mercury levels other than amalgams.
a diet high in fish would be more of a reason to have high mercury levels http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/mercury.html

Docdave,

We'll just have to agree to disagree.
Especially with anything you find on Quackwatch.

There appears to be a subset of the population that has one or more metabolic problems that prevent them from excreting mercury and other transition and heavy metals normally. These people tend to develop chronic illness.

I personally have been diagnosed with a metallothionein disorder and slightly elevated kryptopyrroles which result in "disordered metal metabolism".

Though elevated kryptopyrroles seems to be an inherited tendency, it is not known yet if the metallothionein disorder is genetic, idiopathic, or (metal)toxicity-induced.

For some interesting reading on individual differences in metals handling, see http://www.hriptc.org. Another good site is http://www.cfsn.com.

Because we do not know who has a disordered metal metabolism and who does not, I would err on the side of caution and advise chronically ill people to avoid all forms of mercury exposure.

Sue

I checked out the website of the World Health Organization a while back. They did research and found that amalgam fillings do leach mercury.

The mercury is actually the metal that binds the other metals. An amalgam filling is about 50% mercury.

By the way, the example of adding an acid and base together to form water and salt is not correct. That would happen only with hydrochloric acid (HCl) plus sodium hydroxide (NaOH), which is a violent exothermic reaction. But there are many more acids and base chemicals.

actual in chemistry mixing any acid and any base of equal molecular values and opposite ph's results in a chemical reation of water and and salt of somekind. all acids have a hydrogen ion, bases all have hydroxide(OH )ions to release, when mixed together they form water h2o and a salt, not always nacl,
sometimes naf2,cacl, caf2, or many other salts.NACL is not the only salt in the world.
i agree that in extreme immune defient cases that the amalgams should be removed and detoxed but this is probably only 1or 2% of the population.in most people the placebo effect will be greater than the actual physical effect.
we can dispute this topic forever, yet the question should be what do you put instead of amalgam. Composite is a plastic material with inherent toxicity. porcelain is ok but expensive and the cements used are composites. gold and titanium? maybe the only biocompatable materials that dentists have at their disposal at the present time.
newer reseach is in the field of regrowing hydroxyappetite (tooth enamel) instead of filling the tooth. there is a vaccine for gum disease and tooth decay, but it destroys all the natural flora in the mouth and you would not be able to digest food
