I am on a low carb diet and eat plenty of yoghurt and acidopholus (spelling?) in order to avoid yeast. Anybody with experience? How does it feel to get yeast - early warning signs?

Thanks,

Tim

Hi Tim,

Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but early signs for me are bloating, gas, and heartburn.

Here is a link on yeast info by Tincup, hope it helps. http://flash.lymenet.org/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001199.html

Sometimes i get itching under my skin. I notice it the most as I'm resting and trying to fall asleep. If I'm yeasty, my skin crawls and I feel itchy and even kinda jumpy. Sometimes it keeps me from falling asleep.

If things get out of hand....this is the best elimination protocol around.

Years ago - before Lyme. I tried the Yeast Connection diet (William Crook, MD). The book also provides signs and symptoms of yeast problems. Yeastconnection.com also is a good resource.

I never felt better being on that diet - but I am not very disciplined when it comes to nutrition and alas went off.

When following that diet I had more energy, less GI issues (heartburn, gas, bloating) and lost some weight (which I needed to do).

It is slightly different from the low-carb i.e. you can eat more grains.

It can be difficult to follow, though.

Since starting the abx I am using it again as a guideline.

Thats awesome you are following that diet. I keep trying but I don't really know what to eat on it. I also get heartburn and bloating. Its very annoying. I have to go to a nutritionist I think to get this diet right. Sorry I am not that experienced in this topic but I wanted to reply.

Fatigue is one of the biggest signs for me. It's an obvious increase that happens pretty quickly.

Hello,

I posted about this topic on the general support board yesterday. I wanted to know how bad it was to have one glass of red wine a week?

Now, after doing more research, im reading that we have to stop eating carbs too? I live on bread, rice, pasta, potatoes and of course pizza!

How many of you actually follow a special diet and to what degree?

JB

The thing that finally helped me the most was a tip from my LLMD that you can not OD on acidophilous, and try 10 a day.

I had been taking Culturelle, a really good probiotic, but only 2/day (as recommended by the company). Once I increased to 2 per meal, the bloating problems stopped.

Mercy!

what I was told is that the ABX kill the BB but also kill the 'good' bacteria. That's why you have to take the acidophilus a few hours after taking your oral ABX. Also eat a lot of yoghurt. My LLMD says you cannot overdose on acidophilus.

I also understand that it's the carbohydrates that some way are turned into yeast. That's why you have to take it easy on the carbs.

I believe that yeast feeds on sugars. Carbs turn into sugars.

seriously, check out the Yeast Connection - it explains the whole yeast cycle. or just check it out on the internet - yeastconnection.com (i think).

In my basic understanding... most carbs end up turning into sugar and sugar feeds the yeast - just as lymewarrior stated.

Just a note here about yogurt. I've had little luck with yogurt because most store brands are full of sugar. Be sure to check the labels and also watch out for apartame. not good!

Blue Bunny has a Lite yogurt that has less sugar [9grams?]and it's sweetened with Splenda...safer than the aspartame. However, I still reacted to the sugar in it.

Check the brands at your local health food store or look into making your own.

Another couple notes on yogurt.

If you want to stay away from sugar and artificial sweeteners, go for plain yogurt. Most plain yogurt isn't sweetened. You can try adding stevia to sweeeten it, or a few berries. Berries are high in fiber, and many think it's ok to eat some while combatting yeast.

Also, I just tried sheep's milk yogurt the other day, and I liked it. I can't eat cow's milk. So for other's in that boat, try the sheep's...but it is crazy expensive.

you are right about non-fat and regular yoghurt. The non-fat as more calories than the regular! Must be from added sugar. And here I thought I was doing the right thing with my non-fat yoghurt...

Hi there!

Hope you are doing okay and your LLMD visit went well.
Yeast can show up as a white coating on the tongue, git distress, itching down below etc.
As long as you are taking acidophilus and doing low carbs, and taking Nystatin, you really should be just fine.

I do have the signs of yeast in my mouth (white coating, white/yellow spots/red skin). Should I rinse with salt water / folic acid / ...? Then eat yoghurt afterwards? Or another approach?

Is this Nystatin over the counter?

Tim

dealing with yeast FOREVER. lyme doc
recently told me about Orithrush by ecological formulas. gargle with it. contains sorbic acid, chlorophyl, mint & h2o!

its workin!

ps. used to eat a gallon of plain yogurt a day didnt help. even in totally plain yogurt, there's enough sugar to feed yeast. was VERY sad to give it up but noticable difference once i did !
