When I first became ill with lyme, I started
developing food allergies. Then, I went on
treatment, and they tapered off. I have
been off (long story) and they have been
recurring.

I wondered if anyone else had GI symptoms
as part of their lyme problems and food
allergies as well.

yes. I developed a list of things, wheat,dairy,soy,egg,garlic,lemon... Txlymemom posted some info about why this happens with lyme victims...will try to find it.

Dr. P said it's very common, has to do with the immune system #1 being overloaded, and things get out of wack when #2 takes over.
????????? Sorry I just don't retain the details, very annoying.

When I eat the things on my no list, I get migraines, xtra fatigue, and terrible anxiety.

Same here, since developing Lyme I have tons of new allergies and sensitivities. We all have to eat and this makes it hard. Some days a certain food will give me trouble and then on another day it won't. I can't tolerate: soy, milk, excess sugar, chocolate, tomatoes, sometimes wheat & eggs, MSG, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, and this list goes on. Chemicals and perfumes are really hard on me too.

Yes. Much of this is starting to make sense to me about my own lyme history. Out of no where when I was about 19, I became allergic to apples! I had eaten them for years, then all of a sudden Blam! Other allergies were soon to follow.

I think the lyme was starting to bloom in my twenties, because looking back I had serious allergy issues. I would get so sick I would end up in bed for a couple of days just exhausted. I was in a stressful work situation at the time and I think my immune system was really out of whack.

I still can't eat apples raw. I can eat them if they are cooked or in pie (lucky me). I am still allergic to most 'pit' fruits - peaches pears plums. Cherries are deadly! I have to carry an epipen for that one! Again, the 'pit' fruits I can eat cooked or jammed. It's weird.....

Spitting image of me. I have never had any food allergies to mention, but last week I went into anaphylaxic shock from one bite of PB sandwich and I had to call 911 and they ran me to the ER. Now, seems that half of what I intake, my body reacts to with a slight asthmatic reaction, be it chicken (love chicken), cheeses, certain sodas, a certain chocolate, even a bell pepper did have a neg effect. The weird thing is that it differs from day to day and how my body is that day. Ultra-sensitive with no clear direction, I call it. Chest tightens, shortness of breath. This will literally begin occurring as food is going down my throat and into my tummy. I can feel my ribs just pull together. After a little while it is gone. I take Benedryl and Claritin. Now we also have this one-time-injection piece in case I should ever get an anaphylaxic shock again. Trust em, you don't want to go there. Traumatic experience. But I had the paramedics and firemen here within minutes and they said I had myself a good guardian angel.

Keep Benedryl and Claritin around. They do work. A shot of Benedryl got me out of my shock within a few minutes, so it is really effective.

Hey Diane...

Well, you know my story..."allergic" suddenly out of no where to EVERYTHING...It's over 6 months now of IV nutrition for me...and I am only recently tolerating more than 500 calories in my IV as I even became "allergic" to the basic nutrients...

It's hard to think the bacteria is doing this to us...I mean if we die of starvation, they die too!! But more and more, I'm thinking they(or the co-infections) are still the root cause...

I'm starting to have some success with BioSet...it's helping me tolerate more in my IV at least...

Yup, food allergies are a big part unfortunately, and the odd part for me atleast since i've probably had this disease for over 30 years is they seem to change. Years ago some foods I could eat, i can't now. But others i couldn't eat, I can.

And both kids (with congenital lyme) have really bad food allergies and gluten sensitivity.

Maybe the lyme isn't directly responsible,
but maybe the body is out of whack because
it is fighting infection and now thinks that
everything else is the "enemy."

Someone else's LLMD explained how Lyme upsets
the balance of the immune system.

In my case, when I went off antibiotics almost a year and a half ago, the new food
allergies came on within a month. Suddenly,
I was eating a tomato and my mouth hurt. I
now have sores on the roof of my mouth, which
docs say is due to lyme. When I eat citrus
stuff like fruit or tomatoes, my mouth breaks
out on the roof where the sores are, or I
might now break out in a small rash on my
skin.

My skin seems more sensitive since being
taken off antibiotics. I also had the onset
of food allergies when I first became sick
and they disappeared with treatment.

Go figure, I can't figure it. I haven't been
on treatment for a long time, so it could
be anything. Yuk.

Did any of you guys get checked for candida?

Sugars, starches and the like are exactly what this stuff likes to eat (or at least that what the book I just got says). It also says that multiple alergies can be caused by it.

How long to get rid of it?? The book says 3 mo to 3 years, depending on how bad it is.

I am certainly no expert, or even a layman on the subject but it might be worth investigating.

ALL of my sensitivities come roaring back when I go off of abx.....roaring.....except...last winter when I had completed a course of rifampin...I am wondering OUT loud ...as I have said in the past I originally thought Babesia...but lately...I am looking more at Bartonella as the cause.

Hi ArtistDi,
as far as I know allergies are very common with lyme and associated infections. I have only had a bit of it, but when it came up (itchings after takeing certain foods) I started drinking this south african tea called rooibos tea. It helps allergies in general and I have heard of a lot of hay fever cases getting cured by this. Take a good dose every day. It is very tasty, quite like tea as we know it, but free of caffeine. I like it with cream and honey, its delicious like that (if you can take these things, i didn't check again).
It is very effective, whatever be the cause of allergies (after using it for two to three weeks).

PS: If yeast is part of your GI problems, try coconut cream, also delicious with milk - it helps it with me. There's studies on that but I dont have them.
