Hello Lymies,

Nic had an app. last Friday to ask his doctor for Flagyl (combi Zithro). She did give the Flagyl when he asked for it, but she didn't like it at all. She never heard about research for long time treatment with Flagyl (longer then 6 days).

So now I wanna ask you is their any research about long treatment with Flagyl? And for other Flagyl-users how long do you or did you use Flagyl (and with what results)?

Nic will go for a bloodtest (liver and kidneys) over three weeks.

Thanks and Greetings,
Nic and Ingeborg

Most people can't tolerate Flagyl for very long...major herxing comes with this med...but my first round of Flagyl I was on it for 30 days 500mg 3x/day...but it was the worst 30 days of my life...that was before I knew better to call LLMD and tell her how much I was suffering...I was just so used to misery at the time, I didn't think to question this...Live and learn...

From what I have heard from LLMDs, Flagyl is not really meant to be used long term. There aren't studies done on long term use of it and there's a question about whether it could contribute to cancer if used long term (which I think is like three months or more??). Pulsing it in like Cathy said seems like a good way to minimize possible risks while still benefiting from it. I personally have only been on flagyl once for about a month. My LLMD (like Nic's) was very hesitant to put me on it but I wanted to give it a try. When I wasn't seeing a difference after a month, we stopped it. I never got up to the highest dose, though. I was only up to 500mg twice a day instead of three times a day.

Also, make sure no alcohol at all while on Flagyl. Even avoid things that have alcohol in them, like some mouthwashes and aftershaves, as it can possibly cause severe nausea and vomiting. Apparently this drug is used to help alcoholics stop drinking by making them violently ill whenever they drink any alcohol.

I've been on flagyl for 21 months and would love to stop taking it, but can't--if I go longer than 14 hours without it, I start getting headaches, dizziness, sweating, disorientation.
