lyme expresses OspC when in the tick's gut, and changes to OspA as soon as it encounters the mamalian host system. Hence the failure of the lyme vaccine to do much good for many of us. (it was based on OspC)....

If I didn't hate this bug so much I would be absolutely in awe of its abilities to avoid host defenses. It can also change form from motile corkscrew to cyst, which is largely impervious to antibiotics.
