Hello, I just started taking Doxy 400mg/day. I had read a lost of posts reccomending taking Acid...(something), and so I picked up some today. I had thought it was to avoid getting yeast infections. After reading the bottle though I don't think that's the case. What is the purpose of taking it? And how much? I am diabetic and so already have to eat a low carb diet and maybe that will be enough to avoid yeast? What is the reason why yeast is such an issue on Doxy anyway? Thanks for any replies. Take care, Beth

Hi there,
I dont' what know exactly what you meant about having picked up some "Acid....somthing's".
Do NOT take antacids with Doxy.
The yeast issue is an issue with ANY antibiotics because it kills off bacteria, bad as well as GOOD. So, you need to replace the good bacterial with a good probiotic.
I'm on day 21 of Doxy and have been fine on it, apart from a rash on th eback of my right hand and back of right wrist right now - but I am not sure what has caused this rash.

Yes, acidophilus, that's it. Sorry about the confusion. I couldn't remember exactly and didn't have the strength to get up and get it Thanks for the info. I have been taking an antibiotic for 2 years now to prevent constant bladder infections, and haven't had any trouble with yeast. That's at a prevention dose though, not like the Doxy I'm taking now. Anyway, thanks again for the responses!!

As others have said, you have to replenish the good bacteria that was killed along with the bad bacteria. If not, the yeast will take the opportunity to fill the empty spaces where you should have good bacteria.
When you take the acidophilus, be sure that you have at least 2 hours between the antibiotics & acidophilus - before & after - or it won't have a chance to work.
Print "Diag Hints & Treat Guidelines..." - 32 pages of excellent info. www.ilads.org/burrascano_1102.htm pages 24 & 29: Acidophilus info Dr B recommends 2 per meal - 6 per day
If you're taking Doxy with meals, then plan snacks midway between meals for the acidophilus. Be sure to have 2 hrs wait before & after the antibiotics (abx).
I always take my last dose of acidophilus a couple hours after evening meal so it has all night to work before taking abx in the morning. Works for me.
Be sure to drink lots of water, & I was told to add a squeeze of lemon juice to each glass.

Good evening Beth,
I just wanted to add a few extras to what the others have already given re: Doxycycline...
There are several Doxy Do's (or Don'ts): -avoid milk and all dairy products within 2 hours of your abx - including ant-acids, many dairy products are hidden, so check labels.
-avoid all iron supplements within 2 hours of your abx. Otherwise the potency of the abx could be reduced. This is true of all drugs in the tetracycline family.
-avoid the sun- including protecting eyes and hands even in the car. Burns can happen very quickly.
-avoid laying down for at least half an hour to avoid esophageal burning.
-be sure to take with food.
-do not ever crush your meds.
-do a thorough drug interaction check with any other meds.
-be sure you are doing pro-biotics to replace the `good' bacteria' being killed by your abx.
-be sure you are following the special low-carb/ low-sugar diet.
-be sure to drink tons of water with fresh lemon.
-and...be sure to go easy on yourself...doxy is known as a tuff med...so give yourself a little break when needed.
My best, Melanie

Dear Bethanie Heed Melanie's warning about the Sun. I learned the hardway. A three hr drive left my hands severely burned. Sun screen only helped a little. Shade and covering was the only thing that worked. Good luck Sue
