I just started taking Zithromax yesterday (only 500 mg. in total)and will switch off to Flagyl after 4 days. I feel terrible, lots of nausea and diarrehea. Will this go away in time or get worse? I was on Doxy and experienced no discomfort except for a burning sensation when outside in the sun. My LD decided to change meds over the summer and possibly go back to Doxy in the fall. Any opinions?

Switching meds often makes me feel worse -- increased die-off, I think. Zith is very hard for some people, and does tend to cause stomach problems. It may help to eat bulky foods (oatmeal, brown rice, etc) and to keep some food in your stomach at all times. I made a yogurt protein drink with nuts and blueberries that I sipped on all the time. I also drank a LOT of hot tea -- that helped. And selzer water.

Flagyl was very hard on my stomach -- very important to take it with substantive food. You won't feel like eating, but you really need to.

Probiotics and saccharomyces boulardii help with the stomach and diarrhea. Abx-induced diarrhea can be a real bear, and s. boulardii has an excellent track record in reducing it.

Good luck. It's pretty miserable, I know.

Are you only taking zith for 4 days or are you staying on zith and adding flagyl. When I took zith if I ate any sugar, even fruit sugar or sweetened yogurts I had terrible stomache aches and diarea. When I stoped sugar completely taking zith was much easier. Also your body adjust sometimes after a few days but from my expierience I bet if you dont eat sugar on zith you will be much better,no starches or yeast either.

I have a terrible time with Zithromax. In fact, it was so bad that Dr H gave me a few days reprieve from the antibiotics.

It is worse than the Doryx on my stomach!

Something my LLMD told me about Zith is that is does cause the big "D" but not because of bacterial die off like other antibiotcs so acidolophis will not help with this. It has some effect on the walls of the colon itself.

I still took acidolophis pearls and believed it helped because I was also on flagyl at the same time.

Zith is a great lyme killer, flagyl is a great cyst buster so they work great together at least they worked great together in my case.

Hope you feel better soon

Hi,

I have been on Zithromax for almost a year and it has been the hardest abx on my stomach.

I would eat a full meal, but sometimes I would still get a stomach upset, so eating it with alot of fat seemed to help me personally.

Good luck to you.
