Hello SuZ-Q,I'm sorry, I'm not Tincup...but I can give you a bit more information about Bartonella that may tide you over until she comes along...
I am so sorry that your little one is dealing with this illness.
I too was concerned about being re-infected by my cat who most likely is a carrier, since he roamed the same land that I was infected on, and also my husband, and my dog.
Like most TBDs, there are mixed opinions on being re-infected by your cat, if it is a carrier...but, after much research...I have concluded that if your daughter is undergoing treatment, the chances of re-infection are indeed slim.
The cat can be treated though by an experienced vet...but, the cat also could get re-infected if exposed again to the bacteria, or simply by scratching in the dirt. So, it is questionable as to whether you would want to try and treat, I suppose depending on if your cat is indoors or outdoors primarily.
Not only can the cat pass the disease by scratching, but it can also pass the bacteria simply by grooming itself or your daughter.
Another primary culprit are fleas on the animal.
So, some preventative measures would be to make sure the animal is flea free, keep its nails clipped, keep it indoors, and try not to let it scratch or groom your daughter.
My cat is very affectionate and is an indoor/outdoor cat...so, these measures have not worked for me...but, I am undergoing treatment for Bart, so am hoping that this will be enough to fend off another infection...who knows- right?
Best of luck to you whatever you decide to do.
My best,
Melanie
