Hi Tincup,
I saw a link posted to the Bartonella Alert you wrote in 2002. The info you provided was great and very helpful to me. I was wondering if you remembered who your source was? I took our cat to the vet today and discussed the possibility of our cat reinfecting our daughter with Bartonella(she's still being treated for it). He was very concerned & told us to severely limit her exposure to all of our pets. That went over like a lead balloon and she's been in tears all day.

Anyway, our vet had never heard that Bartonella could be transmitted by a tick and said he would be very receptive to additional info. I was wondering if you would mind if I send him your alert and I also wanted to cite the original source for him. Also, I would like to look up your source myself because the info(other than your post)that I have found so far has been pitifully lacking. We've been battling fever for over a year now that has been attributed most likely to the Bartonella and I just wanted to see what else I could find out about this co-infection.

Your help is most appreciated! THANKS!!!

Hello SuZ-Q,

I'm sorry, I'm not Tincup...but I can give you a bit more information about Bartonella that may tide you over until she comes along...

I am so sorry that your little one is dealing with this illness.
I too was concerned about being re-infected by my cat who most likely is a carrier, since he roamed the same land that I was infected on, and also my husband, and my dog.

Like most TBDs, there are mixed opinions on being re-infected by your cat, if it is a carrier...but, after much research...I have concluded that if your daughter is undergoing treatment, the chances of re-infection are indeed slim.

The cat can be treated though by an experienced vet...but, the cat also could get re-infected if exposed again to the bacteria, or simply by scratching in the dirt. So, it is questionable as to whether you would want to try and treat, I suppose depending on if your cat is indoors or outdoors primarily.

Not only can the cat pass the disease by scratching, but it can also pass the bacteria simply by grooming itself or your daughter.

Another primary culprit are fleas on the animal.

So, some preventative measures would be to make sure the animal is flea free, keep its nails clipped, keep it indoors, and try not to let it scratch or groom your daughter.

My cat is very affectionate and is an indoor/outdoor cat...so, these measures have not worked for me...but, I am undergoing treatment for Bart, so am hoping that this will be enough to fend off another infection...who knows- right?

Best of luck to you whatever you decide to do.

My best,
Melanie

Hi Melanie,
Thanks so much for the info. I didn't realize that just the cat could spread Bart through its grooming. I thought it primarily came throught the flea dirt. We were given a prescriptiont to treat both cats(to the tune of about $250) and will probably start after a short vacation next week. I think the main reason our vet was so concerned was that I told him our daughter is showing some deficiency in her immune system(brought on by the Lyme and Bart?).
Anyway, thanks for your well wishes and the great info. I am going now to check the links you provided. Thanks!!!

SuZ-Q,
I think I remember Tincup saying that Bartonella Alert was written after compiling info from reading 150-200 pages.

I don't know how many sources were used.

In my opinion, it is the best I've read about Bartonella.

Maybe Tincup will see your question.
Hope so.
