I was diagnosed with Lyme's in 1998. I've been experiencing like symptoms. A trip to the ER Saturday (complete with many, many tests - so ill I actually forgot to tell them about the Lyme's since it's been so long) proved all is well. My question is can it actually REOCCUR without being bit by a tick again? Can the symptoms come back this many years later? Thank you!!! Leslie

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you were not treated for cyst forms its possible for lyme to have gone into cyst form and it can break open later from stress or anything and start the cycle over again of lyme. It can be days, weeks , months and yes years later.

Unfortunately, yes it can reoccur without being reinfected. There is much controversy over cure vs. remission most Lyme specialists believed that it can't be cured just put into remission hopefully forever. The bacteria has been noted to live in a cyst state for 9-12 years. There is an outside chance you were reinfected. Many people never see the tick or have a rash. I never saw the tick or had a rash (atleast that I was able to see.) The nymph ticks are quite small.

Graneet, thank you. I would rather have that info than none at all. I am going to the Doc today. I feel lousy. I have never heard of "cyst" forms. I was just on antibiotics for 30 days.

Unfortunatly, you may not have gotten rid of the original infection. On top of that if you were not checked for other tick diseases back in 1998 you may also be dealing with a number of other tick born illnesses at the same time. It is not unusual.

Kara is right you also could have contracted babesia erichilosis,or bartinella. Sorry lousy speller these days.
If your doc dont want to treat you get a good lyme doc asap.
OK, just got back from the doc - he said once you have 2 week treatment as I did back in 98, "you're done" - can't come back. SO, how do I find a good doctor? Thanks, Les Graneet

Les,
Obviously the good news here is that 30 days of treatment that you had in 1998 tided you over well from 1998-2004. The bad news is that you were misinformed then, and you are still being misinformed then.
I dont think *dont KNOW* by just my opinion, that you never got rid of the inital infection, even if you felt *good*.
You can post in seeking a doctor and someone can send you the name of a doctor near you.

OH MY LANDS Two week treatment. Definately not enough from the get go. Thats what we figured its tipical doc report. Im glad tabby sent you a doc number. Many of us go out of state to get treatment. But if you want good treatment you have to have a lyme literate doc and sounds like thats what your in need of. Beings your feeling that crummy.
Hope you get to the lldr so they can get you going on meds. Wish you could have got in here when you first got sick. Could have head this off at the pass. But least your here now.

Of course, don't panic. That may not be what's going on although it sure sounds like what a lot of us have been through. With the exception that many of us didn't even get diagnosed for Lyme in the first place. Anyway, best to check it out to be sure.
If you don't mind me asking, did you first get Lyme while living here in California?
