Could somebody please tell me if being excessively sleepy can be a symptom of Lyme?

I live in TN and have had lots of ticks in my liftime. Live in the country with animals.

My sleepiness started in 1987. I had a sleep study and did not find anything for sure.

I have other problems. But the main thing I would liketo know if the sleepiness/drowsy problems can be a symptom of Lyme?

Please let me here from somebody?

Thanks,
Suttles

Hi Suttles,
Welcome to Lymenet. Hope you find answers to all your questions. There are many wonderful people here to help.

Yes, sleepiness during the day is common to Lyme patients. Sometimes their sleep cycles are upside down; sleep in daylight & suddenly wide awake when it's time to go to bed. Many do have sleep problems of all types.

Others will visit your post soon & give you some better answers.

To find a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor:
Go to the front page of this site & click on SEEKING DOCTOR. Sorry, we can't give you physicians' names on the post.

Or, go to the left of your screen & click on Lyme Disease Association. You can also call them at 888-366-6611 or e-mail Kim Uffleman at [email protected].

If you still have trouble finding a LLMD, let us know.

The Lyme symptom list appears on Dr. Joseph Burrascano's Guidelines. Here's the site:
www.ilads.org/burrascano_1102.htm

(just type in his name in any search engine & it'll pull up)

Keep asking questions, we're here to help.
Take Care,
Janet

Hi Suttles,
Yes this was a major symptom for me and a terrible one to have while trying to maintain any sort of social life and work schedule.
After fighting it for a long time I can tell you i feel TONS better when I listen to my body and nap when I need to - and sleep in. It really helps.

I know that's probably obvious but I think a lot of us try to tough it out and we wind up doign more harm than good.

Hey Suttles!

Yes, the main problem in my last 10yrs plus has been fatigue/sleepiness.
Have problems staying awake while I drive. That made me go do a sleep test. Supposedly have sleep apnea. Not sure about that. That would be the major reason I could not do college, could not stay awake in class. Even on the front row.

Hope this helps......just keep reading.

Good Luck, Amanda

I hear you, Suttles!

Change in sleep patterns and fatigue are two of the symptoms that I have had since I got Lyme.

Have you been tested for Lyme Disease? Have you seen a specialist, a Lyme Literate MD?

Welcome to Lymenet!
You'll find this site is a valuable source for acquiring knowledge about the disease and sharing experiences.

Good Luck!

I used to be very sleepy...could not wake up. Treatment has changed that THANK GOODNESS!

My son still has narcolepsy, and is tired all the time....except at night when he cant sleep at all. He has not been treated for lyme yet. BUT, hopefully soon he will decide to start.

My other kids yes..they too had the tiredness which went away after treatment.

Treatment should be done by a specialist in LYME, not just an infectious disease doctor.
Many of them subscribe to the Infectious Disease Society guideline, which encourages "cost savings" which is not conducive to propery treatment of lyme.

I was so sleepy in the begining with fatigue that even doing a load of laundry would land me in bed for 3 hours. Now, can't sleep a wink... Chalk it up to Lyme...
