I was just tested for an abnormal thyroid and it came back positive. Does anyone know if there can be a connection with LD and the affects on the thyroid glands?
I am supposed to have an ultrasound of my thyroid and a barrium swallow due to pain and stiffness in the front of my neck. Also a very horse voice most of the time. It is hard to swallow and speak.
Any ideas??
Nancy

Hi Nancy,

Never had a thyroid problem until lyme...and many others here have had thyroid problems.

Although my thyroid tests were within normal limits, based on my complaints my lyme doctor tried me on a low dose of Armour Thyroid. I was amazed at how much better I felt after taking it for a while.

I had symptoms similar to yours. Difficulty swallowing...it felt like I had a lump in my throat! And there was an uncomfortable feeling (not really pain) in the front of my neck. Also broke fingernails constantly and was losing lots of hair each time I shampooed or brushed my hair...and my skin was like lizard skin!

Good luck on your upcoming tests...be sure to mention all this to your llmd! Let us know how you make out!

Nancy, were your TSH levels abnormal, or did you have autoantibodies?

My levels were normal but autoantibodies were detected. I''m going to see an endo to find out what it's about.

Yes, Nancy...my TSH levels were normal but LLMD said the tests aren't always reliable, so he started me on a low dose of Armour Thyroid. I have had very good luck with it and have tests done every three months. So far they have been normal.

Don't know that the antibodies could be.?

My LLMD recently sent me to an endocrinologist for testing - came back w/ "low normal" in the Thyroid which she said is sometimes indicative of a need for treatment and she also diagnosed poly cystic ovarian disease!

She did an ultrasound of my thyroid and found "nodules" on the left side. I was started on .025 Synthroid about 2 months ago and last month was increased to .050 - saw improvement in fatigue almost immediatly and have lost 15 pounds w/out even thinking about it!!

Had follow-up yesterday and thyroid was now in the high normal range and the nodule remained the same - so was continued on the .050 w/ follow-up in 3 months!!

I too often complained of a choking feeling and tightness in my neck - also not experienced until I became ill!

My LLMD says the borrellia attack your organs so it is safe to say the decline in glandular health could be related!

Sherry

Sherry, I am getting an ultrasound tomorrow and I am supposed to be getting with an endocrinologist after my doc makes the appt. Just more stuff to add to this mess of a disease! I am hoping that if I am put on meds, I can lose the weight that is being caused by LD. I never was over weight and was very active then I would work out every single day and eat really healthily and nothing came off. I hope these tests are going to get to the bottom of it.
