Next question: has anyone here done the "pulse" type of therapy with antibiotics?
The theory is apparently that the spirchetes grow very slowly, and a few days a week of the antibiotics are sufficient to reach them without subjecting the patient to the side-effects of constant antibiotics.
Has anyone else tried this? I'm supposed to take my abx two days a week, twice a day. I'm taking Flagyl and Vantin.
Any studies or information on "pulsing" available? (I've searched but not found anything specific yet.)
I've taken the meds for 4 days consecutively (before I do the pulse regime, I want to stay on the abx normally and make sure the pulse stuff is kosher) and I have to say I'm feeling better, definitely less foggy. Woke up with a very painful persistent headache one day, some diarhhea, and still generally tired & have little appetite, but overall I'm cautiously optimistic about this combo platter of meds.
thanks again for any experiences & info, circuspeanut

My sister in law sees Dr. J in North Carolina and he had her do pulse therapy of oral meds for three months, then change meds, then more pulse therapy...She took the meds for five days then took the weekends off.
She is feeling much better, but she was also not as sick as many of us to begin with.
I haven't done the pulse method but have taken three days off when my herxes were particularly bad, then resumed the meds. It sure helped...

I'm currently pulsing my IV Rocephin with four days on and three days off each week. For me this has caused a two-month herx since I started it and I have a weekly herx cycle (as opposed to a monthly one that Lymies usually have). I believe this means that the pulsing is killing off more bacteria than the usual 7 days a week non-pulsing treatment. I hope that the herxing eventually dies down and I start feeling improvement. I will eventually (when my herxing dies down) be adding Flagyl in, pulsing the same four days as the Rocephin.
Hope this helps and that the pulsing works for you!

I pulsed on IV Rocephin for 12 weeks. The protocol was 4 days of Rocephin, 2 days of Flagyl, and 1 day off. That started in June and ended about two weeks ago.
In the middle of the regimen, I was feeling pretty bad, especially in the head. I was very confused. It's hard to describe. Toward the end, the confusion went away. After it ended, the arthritic-type pain in my legs and feet felt a lot better.
I'm now taking Ketek 5 days a week for two weeks, then two weeks with no medication. I'm starting to feel worse. We'll see how that goes. It scares me to be off of medication. I haven't been off of medication since last December when I was diagnosed.
I've had this disease a long time (26+ years). I can tell that the antibiotics are helping, but it will take time.

Hi, I pulsed mino 100 mgs three days week a while back. And I take a few days off if the herxing gets too bad.
So far all the abx I ahve been on have helped, I am much better today.

Thanks to all. Interesting stuff. Glad to hear that this is working for some folks.
I felt better for the 3 days I was taking the flagyl/vantin, but now I'm in the 4-day pause and feeling same-old, same-old. Is this typical? Does this mean I'd do better with a constant dose?
My main concern is that by stopping the abx for days at a time, I'd be buildng up my own immunity to their effectiveness. (The old warning about stopping taking an abx prescription before it's done.)
Is there any truth to that?
