I am feeling so good right now after going through months of pain. I am not yet on treatment. Why does lyme go in cyles or flare-ups? I go from dragging my right leg around to almost walking normal (slight drag). I actually feel some-what smart right now (beside having trouble spelling) only to find just around the corner my brain warps. I have a very small amount of pain too.

However, in the back of my mind I know something will pop up! Never knowing what or how severe.

I know some well versed Lymies can explain this cycle to me!

Thank you!

Lyme in Texas . . . yee-haw!

Hi
I wondered the same thing so did a bit or research on it.

As it turns out, nobody really understands why the cycles appear. A few ideas are tht it takes a while for the bacteria load to be detected by the immune system, at which time the bacteria is attacked. At that point two things happen. the first is that some bacteria are destroyed leaving some pieces that cannot be picked by the macrophlanges (garbage truck) because they have a similar structure to other harmelss stuff in the body and that these same pieces are inflamatory to the body, thus the systems.

Once the immune system attack occurs, some of the bacteria go into hiding (the cyst form that everyone is talking about) and/or modify their outside layer so the attacking cells can't see them any more.

The then whole process starts again.

Another theory is that the symptom cycles occur during growth cycles of the bacteria, after which they again go silent.

There are some other theories but they more or less follow the above logic.

The cycles typically continue when you are being treated also. Basically when you are untreated the low point of next cycle is lower than the past one. When You are being treated, it sort of goes the other way, getting better on each cycle at least as far as I have seen.

Hope that helps.

If you are female, your cycle also has some bearing on the pain cycle; which is why women are harder to treat (per my LLMD).

I 100% agree with flare-ups centered around my cycle! I got on birth control pills to help regulate my cycles and I noticed that it also controlled my flare-ups. Most of the time i'll flare-up right before and after. Then sometimes I can count on a good two weeks afterwards. This was the best thing I did because instead of unrelenting pain I can maybe have a week of mild symptoms! Iwonder if this is the case with anyone else??
