My total bilirubin was 1.7 with normal range of .1 - 1.2. My PCP is the one who did this blod work but I haven't had a chance to talk to him.

My last test a few months ago was on the high side of normal. Does this mean I have to stop abx?

Is Bilirubin the liver enzymes folks here talk about?

Is 1.7 really high? Like dangerously high?

I take milk thistle but maybe I don't take enough.

Thanks for the input.

bilirubin is a test for liver function.
it is a byproduct of the liver breaking down red blood cells and it is the yellow subtance in the bile.
it is used for screening liver disease, cirrocis and hepatitis.
with the bilirubin very high the skin and white of the eye take on a yellow tint or hue. it can increase from medications, lyme disease, liver disease and hepatitis.
if your skin is not yellow then there is probably no concern but the doc may want to run actual liver enzymes to see hiw the liver is functioning and why its high.
some medicines in some people can cause hepatitis b & D.
test for liver are
bilirubin, albumin, prothrombin time, ldh, alp, ast and alt

Doc Dave ,
Thanks for that reply.....They also did the following:

Protein, total, serum 6.5 6.0-8.5
Albumin, serum 4.1 3.5-5.5
Biliruin, Direct .32 .0-.4
Alkaline Phosphtase,Serum 43 25-150
AST 17 0-40
ALT 22 0-40

Any other comments? I am not turning yellow as of yet......do I have something here to call my LLMD about or should I just wait to see her in about 6 weeks?

Thanks,
robi

Seems we have some stuff in common(not good stuff),we both just started the atremisinan and Ive had high bilirubin for about a year and a half. The more antibiotics I took the higher the bilirubin went(highest I think was 1.9).Elevated bilirubin is also a sign of bartonella and the only time my bilirubin came into normal range was on bartonella meds(cipro and rifampin).Scince being treated with those meds my bilirubin has been OK.I do believe the milk thistle helped me though,I take the solaray one daily brand.

Hey Joe,
I have not started the artemisinin yet and now I wonder if I should. I have done 2 months of BArtonella treatment with Levaquin.....not sure if I kicked it or not.

How are you doing on the artemisinin? Feeling any better? Are you taking Mepron?

Were any of your other Liver tests abnormal?

Now that you mention mepron,I remember, thats when I had the highest bilirubin (it went up to 3 something on that.I had to stop mepron due to red hands and feet, weird. The artemisinin upsets my stomache a little but thats it,only been taking it for about a week so I dont notice any changes.Mostly it has been my bilrubin in the past that is out of range but there have been times when ALT is off.Ive never turned yellowish.
