I was sitting at my computer today and I had a sudden onset of excruciating pain and pressure in my ear. I could swear my brains are bulging out of my ear. Had complete hearing loss for a while and still have the loud whoosh and whistling sound. Oy vay, the pain. Can't swallow, lean over or turn my head without experiencing tortuous pain. No, I didn't stick anything in my ear, nor was I listening to loud music, etc. I had experienced loss of sense of position and I've also been off balance for the past 4 days (but no ear pain yet). Anyone know what gives? Know what I should do? My doc is 2-1/2 hours away and I'm in no condition to drive.

I have also had pain in my ears. It's an excruciating pain, but it only lasts a split second. If it lasted any longer, I would surely pass out. Fortunately for me, there aren't any residual effects. It just goes away.

It's useless for me to see a specialist. They tell me my ears look fine. I (we) just have to hope this is another symptom of Lyme that will go away with appropriate treatment.

i hope you pain has subsided some.

I've had that kind of pain a few times. Anything I could tolerated with heat and warmth seemed to help.

If you can't get to your Dr is there an urgent care center nearby where someone could check out your ear?

There are garlic and mullen(sp?) oil proparations that you can get from a natural food store that relieve pain and help heal the inner ear, but if the pain is still intense, have a Dr look at it before you put anything in there.

Until then, you could try these things:

Warm tea. especailly some with essential oils like mints. ginger, or chai types. Even water water....hydrate and swallow gently if you can to move toxins and increase circulation

a scarf wrapped around head neck area, or a hooded sweatshirt. heat pack, hot compress.

a warm steamy shower , but bundle up afterward.

putting a hand gently over the outside of the ear/neck and one at top of breast bone or low back to promote drainage

Wow. Blood and pus drained from my ear this afternoon, but the pain isn't so bad this evening. I'm having some trouble hearing and speaking . . . I can't hear myself so it's hard to gauge how loud I'm talking. I haven't had my ear checked out yet, but I'm really wondering if I shouldn't take the dreaded plunge. Anyone else experience pain, blood and hearing loss?

those are definitely symptoms of a ruptured eardrum. Make sure you have a dr check it out...any unusual scarring will have longterm effect on your hearing

Thanks for the advice and comfort everyone. I guess I'd better waddle off to see a duck today, even though it rumples my feathers the wrong way.

BB, best wishes to you .. hope your ER doc can find something for you.

My husband and his brother...only 2 kids in family, have broken ear drums! We didn't know of my husbands until earlier this year when he bought hearing aids & had swelling in the ear/jaw area. Betty G., Iowa

BB,

I had a ruptured eardrum. My daughter had thrown water in my ear ( three months before my health crapped out on me) and I ended up with an ear infection + water in the ear drum. Abx for that.

Then, I ended up with a herniated ear drum with infection. Abx for that.

Then it ruptured and THATS when all my symptoms started ( severe headaches, vertigo)

Makes me wonder sometimes. But anyways, you have all the same symptoms I had then.

I had to go to an ENT and have my ear sucked dry with a big long metal tube looking thing. I wasnt esctatic.

You guys are all so sweet, I could just kiss ya!

I had to go to the dentist first, to see if my two shattered front teeth can be fixed. I have no dentin (enamel) left on any of them, so they've worn down to the point that I have a huge overbite. I found out every single tooth in my head has to be 'built' back up. I don't have gum disease, and I don't have any cavities. Go figure. I feel like I should change my name from Biting Back to Gummy.

I was going to head to urgent care after the dental appointment, but I came home instead. I'm so angry (injustice) and deflated after hearing what this will cost, I could just scream. Anyway, I'm using the hot water bottle on my ear again until tomorrow.

Betty: Your husband and his brother both had perforated eardrums, huh? Wow. How did your husband's happen? Any idea?

Crime: Your scenario sounds eerily familiar to me. I've had the headache for a week on and off, and just realized this is how I felt when I got the tick bite in 1983: the old revolving ear pain, vertigo, losing my sense of position (especially in the dark), swollen glands, headache and jaw pain. I'm wondering if a fungal infection can affect the ears this way. Also curious to find out if infection (Bb, Babs, Bart and the gang) can be cultured from the ear (or mouth). Anyone know the answers?
