My boyfriend is scheduled to begin taking Mepron and Ketek for babesia in a few weeks (we're waiting for the meds). I have several questions:
- What should he expect in terms of reactions, herxing, etc in the first days and weeks? I'm nervous because it will be over the holidays and he'll be doing a lot of traveling, etc.
-Is there anything he should know about what sorts of food/drink to take (or not to take) with Mepron/Ketek?
-Do Mepron and/or Ketek put more of a strain on the liver than Omnicef, which he's currently taking? Any suggestions for how to treat the liver well while on these drugs?

Thanks in advance for your help!
all best,
Lynn

Hi, I just started the mepron/ketek regimine about 3 weeks ago. So far I have tolerated these meds pretty well. I am also taking ceftin and artemisin as well.

From reading on this site I was expecting a terrific herx, and never had one! Now, 3 weeks later I am getting some of my old lyme symps back, I don't know if it is a herx, or just the monthly ramp up.

Also I just recently noticed that my vision may be effected. The only way I can describe it is that it looks like sunlight is being gently filtered - as if it were just before sunset or after sunrise. Since it is winter and the sun is so low, I didn't think it was the mepron, but I just now asked a group of people in the lunch room where I work, if the lighting in the room looked normal. They all looked at me strangely, and said, yes, totally normal.

I don't know about the relative strain that this combo puts on the liver, but I am taking milk thistle/silymarin (sp). It is concentrated/standardized, but I don't know to waht level. Let me know if you want more detail. Good luck and get after that Babs!

Happy holidays!
He should do great on this combination.
I would take them both with food! When you take Mepron you have to take it along with some fat, so it gets absorbed. Have dinner with fat in it, like a pat of butter on veggies or something. Whenever you take your dose of Mepron, have some fat with it.
He might herx, all herxes are different so its hard to say, but consider it a good sign that the meds are working and stay the course. Also, do not be alarmed it he breaks out in a rash when he starts Mepron. I thought I was allergic to it, or that it was part of a herx, because i was burning and flushing all over and had a rash in bizarre places. Its a side effect of the Mepron itself and not an allergy. It may not happen, but in case it does, just know that its not harmful. Every month he should get his liver checked and bloodwork. Just a precaution. Many of us are on this protocol now and are doing well.
Hope this helps!

Other than that, you're all set.

The response to mepron/ketek varies from person to person. I have been on it for 8 weeks, and am doing fine. No real flare ups. I am more tired, and do need more sleep. If I don't rest up, I immediately feel worse. So my advise to your boyfriend would be to get as much rest as possible and not schedule a lot of activities over the holidays.
