Hi, I just started on Flagyl last nite and already I am starting to ache all over. I know that this is a powerfull antibiotic and that the herx's can be bad. Should you start slowely on this one? The directions say take 1 tablet 3 times a day which is what I am doing? Any info on this drug would be helpfull. Thanks!!

I don't have much info for you, but I do have empathy. Flagyl makes me feel miserable.

From what I understand, Flagyl breaks up cysts where the spirochetes can hide. So it's an important antibiotic to take. My doctor has never asked me to take it more than three days in a row. I usually take it weekends and do other abx weekdays. Good luck!

My doctor told me to start with
1/4 a tablet for 4 days
1/2 a tablet for 4 days
1 tablet for 3 days
2 tablets for 3 days
and then I take 3 tablets a day for 60 days.
I was on IV rocephin for 13 weeks and it is known for causing lyme to go into cyst form is what I have been told.

Merrie,

For Lyme Flagyl is usually used along with another antibiotic. The Flagyl gets the bacteria out of hiding, and then the OTHER antibiotic kills them. That is the theory at least.

Are you taking it by itself?

Others have given great advice, but one minor thought--you might want to eat some food about 30 minutes before each dose.

Once you've been on flagyl a while, your stomach will probably get used to it, and then you should be able to take more on an empty stomach.

Assuming your tablets are 500 mg each, that is a lot to take at first. But there might not be any way around the herx. BTW, you can't take ANY alcohol with flagyl. And definitely take lots of probiotics and other yeast-controllers.

You might want to ask your doctor about ramping up- the 1/4 tablet thing.

That's fine if you can't handle it or if you have plenty of time with whatever else your taking with it, and are taking flagyl long term or something, but it won't really start doing it's thing until you reach a higher dose.

I am taking Flagyl alone.

I just stopped taking zithromiacin that did not seem to be helping me enough.

I called the nurse and she told me to stop taking the flagyl for a few days until the herx subsides then start again with 1/4 tablet a day etc.

I haven't had much of a herx on any of the meds I have tried so far so this threw me off a little.

Thanks for all of the input!

The only thing I remember about the drug is that I had a glass of wine and got sick, sick, sick...oh, I was so sick.

I ended up in the ER with a shot to break down the alcohol. The ER called my LLMD who said, "she knows better than that". I didnt get much sympathy.

I couldnt even look at a wine rack after that.

Take B12 1 hour before taking Flagyl. This will help alot! If you feel too bad - call your LLMD and he will lower the dose. Do not use mouthwash, alcohol or even perfume w/ this ! I heard you should start slowly- let me know how you feel!

I've been on flagyl 500 mg twice a day and zithromax also twice a day for 3 months now. At first I had nausea and stomach cramps but not anymore.

The herxes have been long, but not terribly bad. I did other abx combinations for the first 10 months so the lyme load was lessened before starting on this powerful combo.

My llmd says you can stay on flagyl for up to six months if you continue to make steady progress. He also says the herxes can last weeks. This is true in my case.

It's really working great for me getting rid of a lot of symptoms and improving everything. I'm thrilled and feeling better than I have in years!

Definitely avoid alcohol and get on a good yeast program.

If you can tolerate these abx, and only you can be the judge of that, it can really make a positive difference. If the herxes/discomfort is too much I believe it can set you back.

I am currently on a 4 day holiday (stopped last Monday but know it stays in the system for 3 days) from Metronidazole (Flagyl).

Started with 3 days IV 500 mg (I have stomach problems)to test for allergies (am allergic to almost every abx these days) the first week. Managed ok.

Second week did 4 days and felt so bad that I had to stop taking it everyday, couldn't even drive home from the hosp. Has also introduced Zitro every other day. Third week introduced flucanazole/daily as well.

The original idea was to take all 3 for 10 days then break from metronidazole for 7 and continue with the other 2.

Now changed protocol to IV metronidazole every other day and continue with flucanazole/daily and zithro/every other day opposite IV. Seems to be working out ok so far.

Also taking Mg, probiotics, selenium, coQ 10, and the list goes on.

kind regards & Happy Holidays,
ladyhawk
