I hope you had a nice holiday. One of my friends who has chronic lyme is looking for a Social Security Disability lawyer in the state of New York. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure when your friend hires a SSDI lawyer that he/she CAN represent her in CIVIL/FEDERAL COURT if appeals council DENIES her!

This happened to me 8-04 when my lawyer of about 4 yrs. QUIT/WITHDREW me knowing he couldn't represent me in civil court BUT he never told me this ahead of time.

This way you do NOT have to get a new lawyer after appeals council denies you. They will be familiar with your entire case from the beginning vs. when you are notified.

AC gives you 60 days only from the date you receive your denied AC ruling! I'm finding out now, denied 12-23, that there are FEW civil lawyers!

So that's my goal to get this done in the next 6 wks so I don't go over deadline!

SSDI lawyer: have your friend go to DISINISSUES, disability insurance issues, ALL about the SSDI process. A MUST SEE & READ. Sorry, but I don't have time to look up site page, but read below to find it..ok

Have her print off the female drs. 20 pages of detailed info that was applied to her 1st SSDI app!

You can do a search of the following:

1. My and ConnieMc's posts about SSDI in medical comments.

2. Check the topic lines on medical questions for the last week...a lot there.

3. Search using SSDI in medical questions without anyone's nickname.

It will bring up a lot of results.

I suggest that your friend print off the links then check them off as she reads as she could spend several months reading all of this.

After being denied disability on my first try, I hired an attorney on the advice of a family friend who is a paralegal. The attorney was not lyme literate and I had my concerns about being his lyme guinea pig, but he assured me that he had represented many 'invisible illnesses' like CFS/FM successfully.

At my hearing, I was extremely fortunate to be in the presence of a judge that 'got it'. I couldn't believe it! He was very attentive to my testimony and asked what I would consider all the right questions. The judge asked the vocational expert all the questions that my attorney would have asked in his cross examination! My attorney came out of the hearing probably 99% certain that we had 'won'. He was very pleased with how things went in the hearing.....

I received notice on Dec 31, that I am disabled and will be receiving benefits. Kind of bittersweet.

Did your friend with LD already filled the regular SSDI form?

I filled out the long form, enclosed my doctor's medical statement and a letter from my previous employer explaining why I had to take medical LOA.

3 weeks later I received a letter asigning me the benefits with review of my condition every 10 years.

So my advice is, before you hire a lawyer, try the "normal" way. You never know.

My friend said he has filed the SSDI form and is waiting for a hearing. He appealed the denial.

Anyone use a lyme literate lawyer for the hearing process?
