Hi My Friends,

Well just finished up my first 4 days of IV Rocephen. Dr started me on 4 days on 3 days off for the next 12 weeks. I haven't noticed anything so far. I do have lower neck pain almost like I had surgery, hurts to speak loud and also bend over but I'm not sure if it is relivent to the PICC line or the Rocephen?. It started 1 day after the PICC was installed. Has anyone else ever experienced any of this sort of stuff with a PICC or the Rocephen ??.

I called the nurse but she said it had nothing to do with the PICC.. I dunno strange... Anyways I'm taking all that other good stuff too, the nystat and fish oil and some natural bacteria stuff. Will see how it goes and I'll be sure to keep you all posted. I've also found out it not easy having a PICC and a 3 year old :-)

Kind regards
Jeannine

Hi Jeanine!

I've had my PICC in just a little longer than you, almost two weeks. I also had pain in my neck the first ten days or so.

I have a condition called thoracic outlet syndrome, where there is compression of the veins and nerves in the area around the collar bone. The pain in my neck was exactly the kind of pain I get when my TOS is triggered.

I figured that running the PICC up through that area just set things off. I had to add Vicodin in to my regular pain meds for the first ten days, but now things have calmed down and the pain is pretty mild.

I don't envy you a three year old with the PICC in! When I went to my yoga class last week, I tied a red scarf around my PICC arm so the instructor wouldn't try to adjust me on that side.

Maybe you need to do the same thing for the three year old, so they don't grab on that arm.

Hope your treatment goes well. I've already had a pretty good herx, so hoping mine is doing me some good.

Hi. Without your previous abx history, it's hard to predict what kind of herx you'll have.

But safe to say, if you have Lyme and do rocephin, you should start herxing soon. It can hit you all at once, so please be careful about not driving, staying close to home, etc.

Same thoughts as above, very likly you will have herx reactions. Start now to educate husband friends, is there a way to set up backup systems for food child help if you need it on a bad day ? Herxing can be phisical symptoms, but also neurological, emotional. I ahve been having emotional nuerological symptoms, added stress from driving, lack of sleep makes it worse. Let family know you could act teary, moody, etc.. and its not their fault

Hi Jeannine,
I am on my 5th week of IV Roc. and it is a hard road to travel.
Head and neck pain can be overwhelming. Rest, take it easy and be gentle with yourself.
Blessings,
Marblenose

My son is on his fifth day of IV Rocephin [1gm] after previously doing 30 days of doxy with zithro and omnicef mixed in.
In ten days they'll up his dosage to 2gm for six weeks.
So far we've noticed a slight elevation of his symptoms, so he may be experiencing a mild herx. He had pretty severe light sensitivity yesterday but not so much today.
He's on vicadin, which helps dull his pain slightly, but we haven't found anything that eliminates the sharp stabbing chest, leg, or head pain he experiences at night.

We're monitoring him pretty closely and he knows that if any new symptoms develop that he needs to alert us immediately.
He actually prefers the IV to taking all the pills. Of course we're supplementing with lots of acidophilus, multi-vitamin, vitamin c, magnesium, etc. so he still complains about those pills.

Jeanine:

I had the neck pain. MD thought it was more of a herx reaction or possibly that I tensed my neck while the PICC was being inserted. I was so curious that I was putting my head way beck so I could watch the 2 monitors that the Radiology folks were using to place the line.

Neck pain was one of my worst symptons (still is) and got really bad when I herxed on Rocephin.

Pain from the PICC would more likely be in the shoulder or chest areas.

Hi again Jeanine,
My neck, head and shoulders are in massive pain, pressure, uncomfortablility most of the time since starting Roc. My LLMD says it's pretty common. It sure doesn't make it any easier to tolerate but it helps to know I am not experiencing something even weirder than Lyme happening to my body.
Blessings,
Marblenose

I think the neck and shoulder pain must be caused more by a herx than by having the Picc line inserted. I've had neck pain nearly every day since I started IV rocephin 5 weeks ago and I have a mid line IV which doesn't go anywhere near my neck. I also had neck pain when I would be taking oral antibiotics before.

Take care!

Hi All,

I have a question related to the PICC line that I had put in last Wednesday. The PICC was put in 2" more so they had to pull it back and tape it down. It is now Tuesday and I noticed that the 2" they pulled back has now gone back in again, I also noticed the entire site is covered in dry blood. I thought a PICC was suppose to be relitively easy to adapt to . I have been very careful with regards to anything I do.

I also am wondering about the protocol I am on.. I;m not sure I understand why I am on 4 days on with 3 days off. Wouldn't the antibiotic (Rocephen) leave the body by then. I was thinking of calling the Dr and asking for 7 days...

Kind Regards
Jeannine
