Hey, Hope everyone is getting better!

My LLMD has prescribed amoxacillin 250mg 3 x a day for my 10 yr old son. He doesn't want to go with doxycycline because of the teeth staining problem. I am having a hard time finding examples of treatment protocol for kids...so I though I could ask the opinion of parents here.

Also, I wanted to know if kids herx the way adults do and what kinds of things might be different? (What kinds of complaints to watch for?)

My son usually has stomach and head aches, fatigue, sore jaw and neck and such. I know to watch for these, I just don't know what else to watch for.

Actually I am probably looking for reasurance from other parents who have been through this. And I am herxing again, so...I am emotional basket case too!! lol

Any opinions, suggestions or comments would be apreciated! Thanks alot.
Sincerely
Robyn

Hi Robyn,

My 3 year old daughter has been on amoxicillin and Zithromax for several months for Lyme. I think that there is mention of treatment protocol for children in Dr. Burrascano's Treatment Guidelines (look under links for newbies). Let me know if you don't find it and I'll try digging it up.

She would herx every couple of weeks, but is now down to about a month in between herxs. She would have the same symptoms that she orignally got (knee pain, headache, tummyache, chills, fever, sweats, trouble sleeping...) with the exception of the rash.

I found the symptoms seem to get less intense and fewer of them. Last week she only complained of a headache and she had a fever.

She seems to get cranky and difficult and that is usually a warning sign for me that she is herxing.

BTW, her teeth seem to have a lot of tartar, but I'm not sure if it's from the antibiotics. She has a dentist appt soon.

Everyone responds diffrently to treatment, so I hope your son doesn't have a tough time either.

I've been told that children respond better to treatment than adults and my daughter does seem to getting better and better.

How long has he had Lyme and did he get treatment right away?

Our plan is to treat until she remains symptom free for 2 months.

Good luck,
Deb

Hi Deb!
Thank you for the link and the reply!

My son has been 'sick' since he was about 1yr old. We don't know about the congenital part of lyme for sure...but he tested positive for Bartonella and has almost all of the symptoms listed in most sites.

He had a rash on his ankle for about 6 weeks that I thought looked like ringworm. This was recently. I took him to two ducks and neither could tell me what it was or what to do about it.

He has never caught up physically with his peers even though his asthma disappeared when he was 5 yrs old. He can't even open cans of pop or jars that his five year old brother can. By ten yrs old I think he should be able to.

He complains that he can't keep things in his head. Short term memory problems. He gets VERY frustrated with himself. In grade 3 his reading level was tested at a grade 11 level!!! He was VERY bright with language and reading. Now he is having a very hard time in grade 5.

I am gonna check out that link!
Thank you again!!
Robyn

Hi Sweetrhapsody,

My son Thoams has headaches..eyepain, fatigue, stomach aches, night sweats, fever and insomnia. Sometimes his herxes are more emotional, He gets frustrated easily.

He has gotten much better with treatment though, I have seen the most improvement with Zithromax ans Plaquenil.
