Hello. I would just like to tell you what I have learned during my adventure of being pregnant with Lyme. I am currently about 3 months pregnant with Lyme, and the first thing I can say is that being pregnant has not been a fun experience in any sense of the word. I thought I was exhausted from the Lyme alone--well now if I can make it through a 10 minute shower and remain standing I feel I have really accomplished great things!
Aside from that, I have been in contact with Dr. Jones in CT, whom has given us permission to post his name on this forum. He has been quite helpful, and if you do change your mind and decide to have children, I suggest contacting him.
From what I have learned, I feel that if treated properly THROUGHOUT pregnancy, there is a great chance that you will have a normal, healthy baby. Amoxicillin, for example, is a very safe drug during pregnancy, and will help greatly in minimizing the chance of passing Lyme in utero. I will be on this antibiotic for the entire 9 months, 4500 mg/day. It is not helping much in the way of treating ME, but I will have to put my own treatment on hold until after I give birth. I will also not breastfeed this child. I see a maternal fetal medicine doctor who monitors the pregnancy closely to make sure the baby is developing normally and that everything looks good.
Just an aside--I also have a 14-month-old baby boy whom I carried and gave birth to while I had Lyme, but I did not know I had it at the time. I received no treatment during the pregnancy, and I nursed him for quite a while. He has been amazingly healthy, has only had one cold in his life thus far, and is developing completely normally. I know I got lucky, but I just wanted to get across that there are success stories, especially when treated well during pregnancy!
Beat of luck,
Sara
