Two weeks ago my husband's pain management specialist put him on a Duragesic patch 25mg Fentynal (sp?) with Ultracet for breakthrough pain. He is still experiencing pain and nausea with the patch and he sleeps for most of the second day on the patch. Days one and three are tolerable but brain fog is back again.

How is your son tolerating his patches?

My husband has the option of upping his dose of Fentynal to 50mg to catch more of the pain, but he is alrady so wiped out, I'm not sure he wants to do this.

I like the administration through a patch though. It seems like there is more pain relief throughout the course of a day, and not so many roller coaster effects like oral pain meds.

I am pleased to hear there are different drugs that come in Duragesic patches...

Please describe your son's pain up to this RX. It is so hard to watch my husband's pain continue to ramp up. He comments that good days are in a 4to 5 range but ususally he's in the 8 to 10 range and has been for over a year now. Yikes!!

Hi Lynette,

My son has the 50mg Duragesic patch [ fentynal, 3 day] and he takes Percocet 325mg every four hours as needed. His pains previously were 8-10 especially at night, but now probably 3-4. He had nausea the first 2 or 3 days on the patch but it's now passed.
Doc gave him a prescription for promethazine for nausea but only needed it for the first couple of days, then the nausea disappeared, so he doesn't take it any longer.
They've also given him amitriptyline [1 at night] and Ambien [10mg] for sleep. I leave out the amitriptyline, and I'm cutting the Ambien to 5mg, as he's higher than a kite 20 minutes after taken the ambien.
He's singing, clapping his hands, laughing, etc. I asked him last night after he had taken the ambien if he had any pain. He said "pain , what pain , I can't even feel my body !" So, I'm definitely cutting back on the ambien. After he comes down a little bit, he falls right to sleep and sleeps soundly through the night.
Hope this helps, and your husband is feeling better !

[Just a suggestion for all nausea sufferers be it migraines or pain meds or Lyme or all of the above. Miraculous newish drug called Zofran, originally used for chemo nausea sufferers. It is now being used for all types pf nausea including migraines and even worked on my daughters so severe morning sickness she was hospitalized, and the best thing of all it doesn't do anything to you but make the nausea go away completely.
