I have a yeast infection and started taking the product Fungal Defense (I've heard good things about it). I got really sick after 4 days on it.

I talked to the company and they told me two things:

1) Fungal Defense is designed for after being off antibiotics to kill yeast and restore the natural gut flora, but is not for using while taking antibiotics.

2) The extracts in it, such as oil or oregano and olive leaf are distilled using alcohol and so there may be some alcohol in it.

Thus, flagyl and Tindimax users, stay away from this product. I also discovered that many oil of oregano products have alcohol in them. One brand had 21% alcohol(per serving).

If a label says volatile oils, it usually means the product was made through distilling with alcohol. Please be careful.

try nystatin.

I ran out of it, and BOY! do I miss it.
So much better when I take it.

I get depression from yeast overgrowth.

I take oil of oregano, and am fine with it... it is one I use under my tongue.
I take 6 drops a day, and find this is great. I took this while on flagyl and had no problem.

Trish,

It is very dangerous to have any alcohol while on flagyl, my pharmacist told me this when I first got flagyl. He said to not use any hair spray that has alcohol, or make up, even the smallest amount can interact and send you to hospital.

There has been cases where a person has died even with the smallest amount of alcohol.

Hiker53,

How do you manage 6 drops a day? I only use 2 drops under the gonue before going to bed. It burns really badly, then somehow spreads to the rest of my mouth and throat burning. I end up coughing and choking, difficult time getting my breath and then have to drink tons of water. Is this a normal reaction?

I take oil of oregano with clamato juice or V-8 - tastes like a Bloody Mary. I can get 7 drops at one go into me that way.
If I don't use it my throat gets furry.

Corinne,

Yes, I know about the no alcohol and flagyl. My oregano oil does not have alcohol in it. 6 drops is nothing, there was a time years ago I was taking 80 drops a day and this got rid of my Chronic fatigue in one week. I stopped it because it was too expensive, but my chronic fatigue was gone back then.
I NEVER take something unless I am sure it is safe, I was told 80 drops a day in divided doses of the oil of oregano was fine to take for a period of time.
Several people told me it was fine to take 80 drops a day.

I take 3 drops twice a day. I had a dream telling me 2-3 drops twice a day.
Works great for me.

I put in in the mouth, and drink some water with it.

When I was on the flagyl, I was using some herbal tincture with alcohol in it and was viloently ill. I mean, crying on the floor for a few hours. I had no idea at that time if was from the tincture, thought it was from an antibiotic herx. I also took a bach flower remedy, and 2 drops of this near killed me, the alcohol.. It was a more potent alcohol, made from grapes I think.
I did not think that tiny amount of alcohol would make me sick on flagyl, but I was wrong. I even got severe asthma, and pain so terrible all over. Buring body pain,

I later thought if maybe I was soooo sick from the alcohol on the tincutre I was using... I called London Drugs and she said some could not even use mouth wash, as in rinse with mouth wash and spit it out.

I never touched any kind of tincture with alcohol again while on flagyl.

I was told that flagyl is used in stopping alchol. When someone wants to quit taking alcohol, they are given flagyl. A friend told me this.

Thanks for that post hiker - I actually picked up my bottle of it the other day and wondered if I would try it instead of the diflucan. I won't know.

Oh, and as for the alcohol issue with flagyl - be very careful when eating out - I went to an Indian Restaurant and they must have marinated the meat with vinegar or something - massive migraine that would not give up the next day...complete with aura and numbness. As well, I have found out that Breyer's Ice Cream (which I rarely eat) has fermented acetyl alcohols in it know for flavoring...I have two wopper migraines after having it - I also found out that they clean their vats out and add sulfites to their ice cream these days as a softener - amazing how they can get away with this without labeling it specifically.
