Anyone have any advice on how to make taking nystatin powder any easier?

When I tried 1/4 teaspoon mixed in about 8 oz or water and swished it in my mouth and then swallowed it per the directions I gagged horribly and it totally flared up my GERD.

So now I'm just using 1/8 teaspoon in about 4 oz of water and swishing in my mouth and spitting it out. Still leaves a HORRIBLE taste in its wake.

I've been taking it at night before bed followed by Primal Defense in liquid with the hopes that that it will have all night to do something to the white fuzz on my tongue.

Any idea of how fast I should expect any results?

I've kinda got the intestinal and other yeast under control with diet, nystatin and supplements but my poor tongue just keeps getting worse.

I live with a mildly upset stomach and a lousy taste in my mouth plus the white tongue thing. Is this from Flagyl or yeast or GERD?

I'm also on Flagyl 750 mg per day, nystatin pills four times per day and a bunch of supplements including primal defense.

Figuring out when to take all this stuff is positively nuts.

Thanks for the help.

Flagyl can give you a metalic taste in your mouth.

If you are having that much trouble getting the Nystatin down, you can order it premixed. I get mine premixed with an eyedropper to dipense it. The only downside to this is that it has a slightly sweet taste so, I am guessing there is a little sugar or sugar substitute in it. It does go down easy though. You don't need 8oz of water, just the eyedropper full.

You don't really need the Nystatin powder or liquid if you don't have trouble with thrush or yeast in your esophagus, etc.

The liquid Nystatin does have SUGAR in it. Many drs don't know this!!! I would not suggest this route!

I've taken the Nystatin pills for years with no problems at all.

Hi - Since you are seeing that you may have yeast in your mouth, I would stick to the nyastatin powder.

I find it is much easier on my stomach if I take it after eating. Forget your theory about having it work all night if it is upsetting your stomach. Also, I take it 4 times a day when I'm having yeast issues.

I use about 2 ounces of water so that I have less I have to get down. Then I follow it with more water, and/or a flavored drink (nothing with sugar or aspartame), or a sugar free splenda sweetened hard candy, or a B-12 drop which is cherry flavored. You can also try adding some splenda to the nyastatin and water. This cuts the yuckiness down a bit.

Lastly, I wonder if you should be taking a probiotic in addition to the primal defense. The primal defense is the soil organisms and I don't believe it contains any or much of the regular probiotics. If I understand this correctly, the stuff in primal defense does not reproduce inside your gut. It does it's thing and passes out of you. Regular probiotics will reproduce and increase in number.

Blessings -

Angie

Angie:

Primal Defense is a soil-based complete probiotic. It has all the strains of gut flora. It works the same as the refrigerated Acidophilus. However, I take both, just to be sure.

Nystatin is designed to target yeast in the mouth and esophagus. If you don't get the yeast under control there, it will keep feeding the gut everytime you swallow. You should change and clean your toothbrush often. Also, Udo's Choice makes a probiotic lozenge that you can suck on to replenish the flora in your mouth and esophagus.

The sweetener in the pre-mixed is pretty negligible and doesn't seem to bother me. If you simply cannot get the powdered down, try the pre-mixed. I do agree, however, that sugar is a stinker when it comes to yeast.

Thanks for all of your replies...

How much do the Udo's lozenges or the Mycelex troches cost?

Since this darn powder cost me over $150 I'm going to tough it out until its gone and see if it makes any difference before trying the other liquid.

I've also used Diflucan in conjunction with the nystatin tablets and its never helped my tongue.

I've been sort of wondering about Primal Defense since it isn't refrigerated but it didn't seem to affect me any differently than the refrigerated probiotics so I decided to keep taking it. (Besides its a great source of humor for me and my husband as we talk about me "taking my dirt" each morning and night) But maybe I will add another probiotic to the mix... (eek more stuff to take.)

thanks for all of your help

The lozenges are costly. I am guessing about $30 for a large bottle. You can order it from iherb.com for less. You have to keep them refrigerated.

Yeah, add in a plain old refrigerated acidophilus just to be sure. I do both & seem to be able to keep my candida in check.

I also take Olive Leaf Extract and Oil of Oregano (herx city!) in small quantities to help kill the yeast. Oh, you also should have a good digestive enzyme. Since you are already into the Garden of Life stuff, try the O-Zyme. It tastes ok and really helps.

I take mycelex lozenges and they don't seem to do a darn thing for me. Tongue white as ever.

You can get nystatin in pill form.

Also Pau D'arco tincture and freeze dried garlic help.
