Hi everyone-

Very new here and have seen several refer to detoxifying.

What have you found that works best? Do you do this all the time or just wehn you herx?

A simple item you should always add to your treatment protocol is Milk Thistle. It helps detoxify your liver of all the toxins produced by die-off from antibiotics.

Space it out from your antibiotics (and yes, you should use it all the time).

There are many other methods, depending on the level of detox, but I'm no expert. GiGi has some great posts on this.

Here's a good website to get you started. http://www.healthydetox.org./

Just a few simple things that I've used are epson salt baths (no longer than 15-20 minutes or toxins go back into the skin), podi-patches, chlorella, evening primrose....trying to think of others. I check back in after I get some sleep.

Thanks for the replies so far. Has anyone tried Detox Plus ?

What in the world are podi-patches?

I have heard that saunas help but I do not have access to one.

Have you tried asking a knowledgable person at the helath food store what they recommend?

That may be a good place to start. I do Ultra Clear Plus by Metagenics and get it at cost but it's pricy.

Unfortunately, the nearest health food store is 90 miles away from me. I live in a very small town and the many of the supplements that I looked at at my local pharmacy were expired! I will do some research tomorrow online if I get rid of this awefull stomachache and vomiting.

This site has a good description of what these do (which is the only reason I'm sending you here).

I've been using them since last May almost nightly. They detox you through the sweat glands in your feet. Mine are still oozing and almost black every morning. They made a world of difference for me. And yes, at first I thought it was nuts when my LLMD asked me try them at least for 10 days.

But my brain fog disappeared!!!

There are numerous sources for these - I've only tried this one brand made by this manufacturer, but others here have tried ones that are much less expensive from Ebay.

It depends which toxin you are trying to get rid of. Chemicals, heavy metals, biotoxins, etc. all need different agents in order to succeed. A healthy body detoxes all the time, but when the immune functions are reduced as in Lyme, the body tends to hold on to toxins rather than to get rid of them.

Look at www.neualtherapy.com/articles/neurotoxin elimination protocols.

If you are talking heavy metals, Detox Max Plus is one of the best heavy metal detoxing agents, supplies Essential Phospholipids and is extremely effective to stimulate reverse cholesterol transport, cardio problems, renal insufficiency and liver problems.

Supplying good lymph drainage is essential; so are some colonics, especially in the early stages, so that the body is not overwhelmed and drowning in toxin.

The KMT22 is a perfect instrument to help with all these various detox phases as well as reducing the reproductive ability of the different pathogens you may be carrying.

Take care.

Here's my thumbnail interpretation, and it's very general.

What I've come up with is drawn from my own reading and experimenting to find a detox system I can live with-- there are so many different approaches and points of view! I can send you some detox recipes that I've used with success, if you wish.

Detox while on LD/co treatment:

-- Many abx are processed through the liver. Some abx, like Rocephin, are notorious for causing gall bladder problems. My own experience is that you can address this very effectively, and even bring elevated liver enzyme numbers down, with a liver/gall bladder flush. I like this site for explaining the liver detox: http://www.liverdoctor.com/02_liverdetox.asp

-- The kidneys are also mightily affected by abx; so is the gut and the lymph. Detox teas have worked very well for me to keep my kidneys healthy (dandelion tea, etc.).

-- All detoxes work best if you've also scrubbed out your colon first -- makes sure that the toxins are actually eliminated, and not just flushing out of your liver and building up in your gut. The sites already listed in this post and the ones above describe how to do this. I like the psyllium husk/bentonite clay drink for this.

-- When you're not well, not moving around much, and taking in a lot of abx, your lymph system is liable to become very inefficient. So you need to get that moving too.

Simple movement is excellent for the lymph system; there are also herbal combos that are said to help flush it. Drinking good water helps. Massage is another great lymphatic drainage technique. If your lymphatic system isn't working well and you get a massage or exercise, you can experience a very nasty flush of toxins into your system that can leave you very nauseated.

--Yeast/gut detox: If you've been on abx for a while, odds are you have a yeast problem. My tongue gets white and heavily coated when I'm yeasty. If you have a food allergy or the abx has messed up your stomach/gut lining, you might have leaky gut as well.

Yeast can get serious fast, and be as awful as LD/co. Detox is usually a fungicide, like Nystatin or diflucan (manufactured), or Oregano oil, olive leaf oil (herbal). Plus fresh, freeze-dried or Kyolic garlic. Plus excellent probiotics and digestive enzymes. Plus a colon cleanse.

Leaky gut can cause dreadful food allergies and bowel dysfunction, so you need to help your gut heal. Saccharomyces boulardii is excellent for this; diet change is key. There are very good articles online about Leaky Gut -- it's a good idea to read up on it. The liver detox site I've listed has good leaky gut info.

--neurotoxins from Bb, babesia, etc: This is a weird area. There is some research that indicates that Bb, babesia, and maybe some of the other infections release toxins that affect the brain (and the rest of you). Some docs like to use cholestyramine(CSM) to bind these toxins and move them out of the brain and the rest of the body (or Welchol, beta sisterol, etc.) The research is very weak in this area. My own experience with CSM is iffy -- it may have helped a great deal, but so much else was going on for me at the time, I just dunno.

--Detoxing when herxing. Just my own experience, but I've found that by the time I hit a major herx, I'm not in a detoxing sort of mood, unless it involves crawling in a warm epsom salts bath. Herxes are thought to be a direct reaction to bacterial die off, whereas the toxin problems I described above are caused by the abx itself, or the yeast, gut problems, etc.

I've found some things that ease some herxes, but I don't know if I'd call them detoxifiers, exactly. But you can assume that keeping your kidneys, gut, and liver in good condition will help flush the dieoff out faster. There's a good overview about herxing at the Jemsek Clinic

--Abx and pharmaceuticals in general cause terrible problems for some people. I'm one of the lucky people with a teflon liver who are not chemically sensitive -- but don't assume that whatever you're going through is simply a herx or an LD symptom. Many folks on this board have done a terrific job of hunting down new ways to help their bods deal with LD AND the chemicals used to treat it. So keep asking questions and trading experiences....

Detox in general:

--There's a whole other side to detox for anyone, even if they are healthy and haven't taken abx. The main issues seem to be
- heavy metals, like mercury and cadmium
- parasites, as in the ones you get from pets, soil, veges, etc.
- blood pH levels (too acidic or too basic)

Didn't mean to write a novel. This is the most coherent I've been in the past week--guess I'm celebrating. Hope I haven't muddied the waters for you...

Plenty of filtered water is needed for the body to flush out toxins and waste with or without aids for de-toxing.

Imanurse, I have found distilled water, at least a gallon & half a day great during heavy detoxing to be a tremendous help.
Detox bath with epsom salt three times a week have made very bad mornings into better days.

Podi patches made a world of difference for me. I tried various ebay patches too but they are no where near as good. The only ebay patches that worked at all for me were "copper", but again inferior to podi patches which are well worth the extra money.

You can search for my earlier detailed posts about podi-patches & ebay patches.

Before I read here about podipatches, every night brought horrible pain to my feet, ankles, legs and total brain fog. Nothing brought relief. The first night I used podipatches I slept through the night for the first time in a long time. The pins and needles and other sensations plaguing me were reduced right away. After the 5 day trial convinced me they worked I got a 60 day supply and did a whole month straight.

Now I use them when I feel the toxins building up.

Epsom Salt baths are also very helpful. I drink a lot of water first and use only 1 cup of salts if I'm doing the baths frequently or 1 1/2 - 2 cups if occaisionally. Experiment and see what works for you.

The first times I did the baths they didn't make me feel very good (made me anxious) and I was wiped out afterwards. I found it was best to soak before going to bed. Now that I am doing so much better I respond differently and feel energized after soaking.

I take milk thistle every night before bed.

After much research we created a plan for me which included fully detoxing. We wrote about the methods I chose, why, the order, how some of the processes went, etc. We also include many links to other sites with good articles, directions, and products. We wrote this before we knew I had lyme, and I was doing it for chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. I'm about to start lyme treatment and I'm so glad I did all this. It did make a big difference. Here is the link:

Brushing your skin in the morning before a shower or bath is a good detoxifier. Your skin is a major detoxifying organ...kind of strange to think of it as an organ but it is I believe.

You can use a loofah or brush especially made for your back or body. I found one at the health food store that is made for body brushing.

Brush towards your heart getting as much of your body as you can reach. Then Bathe. I have not been as consistant with this as I should be.

I have also heard that rebounding on a mini trampeline is excellent for getting the lymphatic system moving. I haven't invested in one yet but one woman I heard swears this was an integral part of how she healed from lyme.

Dontlikeliver, please read today's post (4/3) "which podi patches are best" in answer to your question.

Lymied, as for skin brushing, I have been doing it religiously, yet wonder what good it is doing. Is there some way to tell if it's working? Someone had posted that if you need to urinate right after, it's working, but I don't understand the connection.

Tons of water, herbal teas and a good, gentle fiber to carry the garbage out is what I do. Psyllium/bentonite/water or juice is good intestinal cleaner.

Hi lhm32 - That is funny about the urinating after skin brushing...hadn't heard that before but I guess if you are getting the lymphatics moving that would be a good thing to do.

I don't know if it helps either but I keep doing it....figure it can't hurt
