I had a really freaky feeling today. I was doing yoga, and moved into a pose bending forward to stretch the back.

I got a feeling like an electric shock moving through my body. The shock ended with an extremely sharp pain in my foot. It made me jump. I'd guess if the pain lasted long enough for me to tell, it was around 9 on the pay scale 1-10.

Anyone else get this? I'm assuming I somehow did something to a nerve. In general, I've been having nerve pain, including tingling and burning, throughout the right side of my body lately.

These "electric shocks" are indeed the most terrifying things! I would get them at night in bed and they scared me to death. I also had severe cramps in my legs at night but they were mild in comparison to the "shocks".

My doctor had never had anyone with that symptom before but I have read somewhere that others have had them. One of my theories had to do with low electrolyte levels as I have had low magnesium. I am on IV magnesium and have not had any "shocks" since so maybe there is some connection. Who knows??? But just thought I would pass it along.... Betsy

I have it

The best way to describe it is that it's like being shocked when you turn the light switch on - but this electric shock is inside the body and can be anywhere

Same thing with the stabbing pains I get

Weird symptoms

Jill - that'a a great description! Only it was more like I'd imagine sticking my foot in an outlet would feel like.

Hey Aniek,
I get these extreme shocks that travel up and down the length of my spinal column. They only last a second at a time, but on the pain scale they are a 9 out of 10. Sometimes they accompany my myoclonus.

They happen most frequently when I'm falling asleep, but really can happen anytime.

Let me know if you figure anything out. I'm going to up my magnesium and see if that helps.

Take care,
Ms. Myo

Yeah, it is much more painful.

Mine come and go. I can get several every day for several days or I can get them every once in awhile.

Sometimes they happen so quickly that it's gone by the time I feel it and other times it seems to last several seconds.

I tried the magnesium but didn't find it did anything for me.

I have these symptoms occasionally now, and much milder than before.

When it got disabling, and I couldn't sleep or stand striaght, I found that a Myer's cocktail IV was the only thing that would break the cycle.

I get these in my legs, and also get some unbelievable leg cramps (just got done with one), but I really can't tell how much of this is due to lyme or to a ruptured lumbar disk which I know is in my back.

When my disk re-ruptured 9 months after having been repaired 2 years ago, I was having a lot of lower-back-to-toe shock sensations. Big ones!

So if it's only in your legs, you might want to have your spine checked for disk problems, etc.

The shock went through my entire right side. It culminated in pain at my foot.

I just got results from an MRI. I have slight degeneration at 5-6 and 6-7.

Aniek said (in part):
"I'd guess if the pain lasted long enough for me to tell, it was around 9 on the pay scale 1-10."

Now with the pain I've been having, I'd LOVE to know where I can get such a high rate of pay for it....

:-)

Those electric shocks that you're describing, the ones that go from your spine down your back and into your leg, or from your spine down to your arm, are called "L'hermitte's." They are very common in Multiple Sclerosis and also in some kinds of spinal injuries. It might be a good idea to see a neurologist...

Oops. I work for a union, so pay scale is a pretty large part of my work vocabulary.

Thanks for the advice Maryanne. I just had a cervical spine MRI, and it found slight spondylitis in C5-6 and C6-7. I saw the nurse, but my Dr. hasn't looked at the film yet.

I haven't had another shock. I do have other neurological symptoms though, mostly pain and slight myoclonus.
