My finance was bit by a tick in PA 3 1/2 weeks ago. We sent the tick to Igenex, Inc. to be tested for Borelia burgdorferi.
The test was negative for Genomic PCR but positive for Plasmid PCR.
I understand that Borrelia has multiple plasmids that carry infectious antigens.
Can anyone explain these results?
My fiance has not presented with any symptoms of Lyme's disease. I want to find a doctor that will give him the antibiotic therapy for a month. Am I over-reacting?
I am also worried because he already has a neurological problem - epilepsy.

I don't think you're over-reacting at all. My LLMD has given me a 4 weeks of Zithromax plus a shot of Rocephin whenever I have gone into the office presenting an erythema migrans.

Can't help you with the test results but there is a fairly active Lyme Disease Support group in Gettysburg that may be able to help you out with an LLMD who will treat him with 4 weeks of antibiotics.

OK, firstly - No I don't think you are over reacting. A +ve PCR means that the DNA from Borelia was found in the tick.

Secondly - there is a small window of oppertunity to eradicate the bacteria before it becomes more difficult to treat. Miss that window and you could have the disease for years. You already have 3 1/2 weeks passed, so I wouldn't delay it any further.

Thirdly - if your finance does not have the disease, the harm done in taking the antibiotics for a month is far less than the harm done in not taking them if he does have it.

Of course, this is my opinion and you should ask a lime literate MD over what I say. I would post over in "seeking a doctor" for a llmd in your area.

Some docs don't like to give you the antibiotics unless there are symptoms involved. I personally think that is a dangerous game - especially if the tick has a +ve DNA test.

Tick possitive pretty high numbers that he's infected. Get a LLMD soon and start treatment.
Personaly if it were me just freshly bitten possitive tick or not I would get on antibitics and also flagyl for the cyst forms of the spirochetes and I would not be treated less than 6 weeks. If it were me.

WELCOME To LYMENET

Here's more goodys! A typical response to newcomers.

Hi and WELCOME! Get a LLMD or at least Dr that is willing to learn about lyme. Borrelia Burgdorferi is a clinical diagnosis, based on symptoms and on your response to treatment. Good Luck, bumpy road ahead.

Post for a LLMD in Seeking a Doctor. Ps remember I am not a Dr, just a fellow sufferer.

Send his blood to Bowen Research lab. I too had all the testing and we go by Bowen. It searches for the coinfections also. They discovered I had HME, HGE and babesia when Igenex found only lyme, MDL found nothing.Have your doctor call 1-727-937-9077 which is the Bowen Research lab. They are at 1200 Pinellas Avenue, Units 11 & 12, Tarpon Springs FL 34689

They will send you the Serial dilution kit for lyme and the coinfections. You send by charge card if you want the $250 donation and take it off of your taxes. Your doctor will hear within 24 hours after they receive their blood by fax. Then, about a week later, the doctor will get the colored pictures of any lyme and coinfections.

Go to www.lymediseaseinformation.com and look at the coinfections. This is what you will see if your fiance has lyme. Remember, not to scare you, but you can pass this on sexually since it is related to Syphilis.

He needs to be treated no matter how much lyme he has. We are still fighting this after 11 years. Much health to you.

Okay...here's what I did when I presented with an EM rash. I went straight to the local Dr. He told me it couldn't possibly be Lyme because Lyme doesn't exist. I asked him which was worse in his book...giving me a full antibiotic treatment with me not having Lyme...OR...me not getting the antibiotic, having Lyme, and suing him for all he owns for failing to treat me.

I walked out with a prescription.

Most Drs. will happily provide you with a month's worth of antibiotics based on the information you have. It is what the CDC/NIH recommends. Most of us need more than that and that's where we run into issues.

What I'm trying to say is that I wouldn't waste another minute. Get the blood tests, etc. Follow up. But don't wait for a result to get the prophylactic treatment. Besides, at 3.5 weeks, it's most probable that a blood test will still come back negative. If he's got it, you want to get it before it has a chance to show a positive result.

Everyone else...am I wrong?

Plasmids are separate DNA from the actual DNA of the slyme spirochete, but they are specific to the bacteia itself - read this site for a good description bewteen the two.
