The first day after he (my 9 year old) took his ceftin he said he couldn't get comfortable and he wandered around and laid on his stomach most of the time since he said the back of his legs felt funny.

I though maybe he was just anticipating something from the bx and that was all it was. No!

The next morning he took second dose. That evening we were in the store and he started crying and saying his ears felt funny. We tried to calm him down, but it progressively got worse.

He became almost hysterical saying it felt like his ears were being pulled up higher and higher. He then had another panic attack. I had to give him a half of a valium to calm him down.

He took his third dose this morning and this evening his neck felt funny like it was being pulled to one side and we joked with him a little so he wouldn't panic. He seemed to be more calm.

I tried to explain that this was probably muscle spasms from the bx working and that it was a good thing. It meant the meds were working.

They went on a bike ride. They being he and his sister and father. It didn't help. He came back with his neck pulling to one side and he couldn't straighten it out.

He thought it was kinda funny but I could see the panic rising. I can feel mine rising as well. Please tell me if anyone has had anything similar from lyme or is this a possible herx reaction.

I notice people saying the back of their necks is where they felt the herx first. Is there something he can take , that I can ask the dr for tomorrow, and believe you me I will be asking for and getting something for his anxiety.

This is ridiculous and I won't take no for an answer. There is no reason a nine year old should have to live in a state of panic because the dr is uncomfortable prescribing tranquilizers. There is a time and a place for every thing and this IS the time.

Please, please, please, write me back with some advice, maybe rx sugg. and is this normal. help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have had my 10 & 5 yr. olds on antibiotcs going on 2 weeks now.

Didn't have anything like that - but had just about everything else.

My 10 yr. seemed to have more of the neuro problems; lots of anxiety, crying, said he was scared to die, didn't want to leave my side one night. Said his body felt weird. Said his whole body hurt and was very heavy. I also have to ask for anxiety meds. this week.

Also, I started graphing their temps. because their drs. here don't think they have fevers because their body temps are so low to begin with. So 97-98 can be a fever for my kids.

Hope the little guy is feeling better and you get some help for him for his anxiety.
regards

This is a hard one. I freaked out when I first started treatment too. All the strange sensations lyme creates are enough. Then with the meds increaseing sx this can be frightening. Its hard for adults..........I guess harder for kids since they don't understand.

What he needs to see is that you are not frightened or agitated by his herx. He is gonna take his cues from you.

Lyme sx are different for all. My numbnes can feel like pulling as he describes it.

His SX sound normal to me. I am not a doctor. But from personal experience I can tell you migrating sx all over my body are common when I start a new drug. I am experiencing this right now with my own med change.

Remember he is looking to you..... act calm even if you're not.

He will get better.........

Hope this helps,
robi

When I was at my worst with Lyme - I was put on anitbiotics - I was anxiety ridden and everything felt weird - I had never experienced anything like it before. I didn't know I had Lyme but I had a fever so, I kept on the antibiotics.

My symptoms just got worse until I finally decided that it may be the antibiotics and stopped them all together.

If your son is experiencing anything like I was...I would seriously consider d/c the antibiotics (it was horrible) and seeing if it goes away and then try again with the same or different antibiotic.

Sorry your son is experiencing so much discomfort.
I don't have the answers for you, but will make a suggestion.

When there is distress with treatment, it's always best to check with the Lyme Dr.
There should be an answering service at night & on the weekends.

It's best to err on the side of caution rather than take a chance on ignoring something that could indicate a change is needed in the treatment.

I'm hoping some mothers will see your question & will be able to share what they've learned from experience.

I agree, but ask the dr for anxiety meds for the times it's really bad.

I would also consider backing off the meds to see if that helps, or try another to see if it's just the abx or a herx.

I would vote that it's a normal herx, but I'm no dr!!

Lyme herxes can get really scary and weird!

Lord I'm longwinded. Thankyou all for your posts and please don't stop now. The information is invaluable and I would still like to hear from others who might have experienced anything similar. Or what the herx is like for ceftin. My Jordan, the one in question here, heard me reading the first response to his dad and thought I was making it up since it was exactly what he was experiencing at the time.

I made him come over and read the ones that I thought wouldn't scare him too bad and bless you all it helped him so much. It really made a difference.

See his older brother went through hell when he was hit hard a couple of years ago with bipolar, and yes I know he has lyme and I'm working on that.

Jordan watched his brother, whom he is very close to, fall apart before his eyes and slowly edge towards really loosing his mind.

It was very painful and Jordan was severely traumatized. Older brother (Justin) is on lithium and doing well now.

But when Jordan was diagnosed with bipolar a year afterwards, he was terrified he would go down the same path, and I was equally determined that he would not.

Thus the recent trek to see Dr. C. I know he will get better, but he's only a little boy, and I might add the most tender hearted and caring one I've ever seen, and I've had six boys to learn from.

He doesn't know that he won't fall apart too. Any new symptom that hints at being mental scares the hell out of him. My heart is breaking watching him fight these demons.

tikbit,
just like you...my heart aches for these little guys. We are trying to figure out if my 10 yr. is becomeing bipolar.

What do think if our guys had a chance to talk to each other by email. Lyme pen pals. I know that my guy just feels so different than all other kids his age. He is having a hard time relating to others, which I can completely identify with. When I got on this forum it saved me a way I can't explain.

What if I miss a dose?
What drug(s) may interact with cefuroxime?
What side effects may I notice from taking cefuroxime?
What should I watch for while taking cefuroxime?

What are cefuroxime tablets? (Back to top)
CEFUROXIME (Ceftin) is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It treats many kinds of infections including those of the skin, respiratory tract (tonsillitis and bronchitis), sinuses, ear, and urinary tract. Cefuroxime also treats some sexually transmitted disease. Generic cefuroxime tablets are available.

What should my health care professional know before I take cefuroxime? (Back to top)
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
*bleeding problems
*kidney disease
*stomach or intestinal problems (especially colitis)
*other chronic illness
*an unusual or allergic reaction to cefuroxime, other cephalosporin antibiotics, penicillin, penicillamine, other foods, dyes or preservatives
*pregnant or trying to get pregnant
*breast-feeding

How should I take this medicine? (Back to top)
Take cefuroxime tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Cefuroxime works best if you take it with food. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose? (Back to top)
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses. There should be an interval of at least 10 to 12 hours between doses.

What drug(s) may interact with cefuroxime? (Back to top)
*other antibiotics
*probenecid
*water pills

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from taking cefuroxime? (Back to top)
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
*difficulty breathing, wheezing
*dizziness
*fever or chills, sore throat
*headache
*reduced amount of urine
*redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
*seizures (convulsions)
*severe or watery diarrhea
*skin rash, itching
*swollen joints
*unusual bleeding or bruising
*unusual weakness or tiredness

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
*diarrhea
*gas or heartburn
*nausea, vomiting
*vaginal itching

What should I watch for while taking cefuroxime? (Back to top)
Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not begin to improve in a few days.

If you are diabetic you may get a false-positive result for sugar in your urine. Check with your prescriber or health care professional before you change your diet or the dose of your diabetic medicine.

If you get severe or watery diarrhea, do not treat yourself. Call your prescriber or health care professional for advice.

If you are being treated for a sexually transmitted disease, avoid sexual contact until you have finished your treatment. Having sex can infect your sexual partner.

Where can I keep my medicine? (Back to top)
Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Protect from moisture. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

[Yes, yes and yes. Jordan would love to have a e-mail pal.

I think it would help both of them to have someone else the same age who understands. My e-mail is [email protected].

And you are right I can't even begin to explain how much safer I feel and how much better able I can handle all the curves this disease throws at me with the love and support I receive from this board.

These people are truly a God send and have gotten me through many bad times. They will I hope always be there for me and I intend to be there for them. I have answered your posts in the past and I hope you e-mail me soon. Love kat.

Bless you, Kat. I am so humbled by the courage it must take, to help loved ones, especially young children, through this very difficult illness. I hope you give yourself credit for being a very brave woman.

I've been following your posts, and keeping you and your family in my prayers. I wish I could do more.

You're right, there is no reason for anyone, much less a child, to be going through that agony. I'm not a doctor, but I've heard wonderful results in the treatment of Lyme with a supplement product called Samento. Try looking for it at www.myherbs.net

Yes, the herbal stuff helps tremendously. But lyme really, really nasty. You have to attack with everything.
Cefuroxime axefil is pretty hard on the gut. For me, yarrow tea heped immensely to enable my stomach and GI system to withstand all those abx. Somewhere in between doses of abs, eating yoghurt and taking acidophilus is very important. Grapefruitseed extract and olive leaf extract, also away from food, also helped me. Healing thoughts; healing music- Beethoven!
