I was treated for Bartonella four times starting in 2001. Here are the treatments I was on:

Avelox - August 2001 for 15 days (not a standard Bartonella treatment but my LLMD didn't know that much about it at that point)

Doxy and Rifampin - Spring 2002 for 4 weeks (was supposed to be 6 weeks but my stomach couldn't tolerate either of these meds well so I did 2 weeks, took a break, and did another 2 weeks before having to stop for good)

Cipro - Fall 2003 for 6 weeks (I think)

Levaquin - Spring 2004 for 8 weeks (I think)

After all those treatments, I still believe I have Bartonella. For me it's hard to tell what symptoms are from the Bart and which are from the Lyme or Babesia. I think it can be a difficult one to get rid of for some people.

Peace and healing,
Annie

In Nov 2001, I tested positive for Bartonella by PCR by Med Diag Lab in NJ.

At that time, people on LymeNet said you should have a combination of meds:

EITHER Cipro OR Levaquin
along with
EITHER Biaxin OR Zithromax

I took Levaquin & Biaxin for 2 months.
A month later, I still tested Positive by PCR for Bart.

Took Levaquin & Biaxin 2 more months.
Seems it took care of the problem.

I'm sure you know that with antibiotics, you have to be aware of possible side effects.

With Levaquin, you have to be very careful about tendon damage.
Cipro has its possible side effects, too, but I don't remember them.

I've heard that many drs are now using Rifampin in combination with another antibiotic.
In earlier responses, they said Doxy or Minocycline were taken with Rifampin.

Go to "Diagnostic Hints & Treatment Guidelines..." www.ilads.org/burrascano_1102.html
Look for 'Co-Infections in Lyme.'
Under 'Bartonella' read last paragraph before section on 'Nutritional Supplements....'

Includes this info on Bart:
"...patients seem to do best with a combination regimen that utilizes agents that can penetrate cells.
Typical combinations include an erythromycin, plus a fluoroquinolone or rifampin.
Treatment progress is most commonly assessed by PCR post treatment & serial titers."

Bartonella (Cat Scratch Disease for newbies) also depletes Mg...I have documented this before.

It takes Mg and Ca to make HEALTHY antibodies - your OWN highly targeted "antibiotics". Documented on MDSCHOICE website explaining the functions of Mg.
