Larkspur, look at yesterday's postings, there's one by Robi referring to this. I've never seen this topic on Lymenet and now I've seen it twice in two days! I am sure I did have a staph infection, for which I used Bactroban nasal (see my reply to Robi), I'm just too chicken to let the doctor put anything up my nose to culture it.

I had hugh issues with staph. My body just harbored it, Had to shower with special soap and used bactoban cream in my nose. Did not use the spray, Just was my ID docs preference.

Seems to have done good. I have had a pic line in me for 2 months now and no staph infection. The longest prior line be it central or pic was 4 week, before it went to Staph. Knock wood no signs of any trouble at the moment.

Thanks Laurie.
This is my understanding (in a brain foggy kind of way):
some chronic Lyme pts are found to have antibiotic resistant strains of staph in the very upper sinuses. It's contained up there by some sort of biofilm your body creates, but the infection/film causes the production of cytokines, which result in all sorts of bad stuff (inflamation etc)

So, I had the culture (not great, but there are worse things) and it showed I have a crazy staph infection + MRSA up there! The staph they found is resistant to 10 classes of antibiotics. My LLMD rpted she's never encountered anything like it, and wanted to treat it aggressivley. But she also cautioned that these bugs would not like being attacked and I might not feel so hot.
Well, she did not lie. I've felt AWFUL for several weeks now.
I've also started actos and reintroduced Doxy around the same time. I'm curious how long the treatment of these staph infections last.
So, if anyone has had a similar experience I'd be very interested to hear about it. Thanks so much.

This is all very interesting to me. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with a staph infection in my nose as well.
I was prescribed bactroban ointment. Within 24 hrs my eyes were swollen shut, nipple, ears and testicles were weeping infection.
Is this some type of herx to the Bactroban possibly?
I have not worked since this incidence and have had continued skin issues until starting the antiobiotics for lyme.
My skin is slowly clearing up. My entire back is covered with acne now which it never was before. It is also getting better, but slowly.
Can Lyme be on the skin like this?

This is becoming a huge issue in the medical community. My old doctor here in ATL has seen this several times. I have friend that recently had this as well. Not sure what he went through to get rid of it. I am curious as to how this is affecting Lymies, or if we'd be more prone/susceptable to it.

Hi,

I'd just like to say that Actos made me sicker than a dog, and it took several weeks to get back to pre-actos base line. You might want to consider that Actos is not the right drug for you, although it may well be. You might want to research it a bit more.

Oh this is me! My doc checked me back in March with the nasal swab.....touched my brain I swear (ouchie)!!

I had 2 kinds of staph and I was shown which ones and what drugs are used to treat.

I've added Bactrim and a specially formulated nasal spray w/ 2 kinds of abx in it....I'm going on 2 months with that plus the Ketek and cholestyramine.

I herxed big time on the 4th week!! Plus I noticed that I had some acne around my nose for awhile until the abx cleared it up. I also wondered if it was staph trying to get out of my nose via the pores.

Larkspur,
You said,
"Some chronic Lyme pts are found to have antibiotic resistant strains of staph in the very upper sinuses. It's contained up there by some sort of biofilm your body creates..."

When I was reading info about Serrapeptase, a study showed that this enzyme helped to clear up chronic sinus infections.

Also, there was a reference to Serrapeptase having the ability to enhance the activities of antibiotics against biofilms, thus helping the antibiotics to wipe out bacteria.

This link discusses the studies: http://smart-nutrition.net/serrapeptase-research.htm

Read the section, "Serrapeptase and Sinusitis."

Would your doc consider adding this to your regimen?

Carol

Larkspur,
How did you find out about this staph? Did you have an outbreak on your skin? I've dealt with it too, but I'm not confident that it's beeneradicated (due to changing doctors, etc). Please let me know. Thanks!

Thanks for all the responses. From what I understand, the staph in the upper sinuses and resulting biofilm causes similar inflamation/symptoms that having Lyme does. So the idea is that this is what might be keeping chronic Lyme pts ill. I've never had any symptoms of staph on my skin, prior to finding out about this,my nose would run for about an hour every morning non stop. I think the research about the staph in upper sinuses is associated with DR. S. of the chronic neurotoxin stuff.
My treatment thus far is an antibitoic nasal spray compound with 3 kinds of antibiotics plus bactroban nasal ointment. I've been taking CSM for a while. I'm also back on oral Doxy (400 mg)I guess it's been almost 4 weeks since I found out about the sinus results.
The first week of the sinus treatment was hell - not necessarily typical Lyme symptoms but more like the WORST cold/flu you've ever had. Then ,I got up to the 400 mg of Doxy and added actos to my CSM regimen, and continued to feel absolutely horrible (but mostly symptoms I associate with Lyme) I'm still on my Sinus/Doxy regimen, but finished Actos/CSM a couple days ago. I think I'm feeling a little better.
Carol - thanks for the info about the Serrapeptase- I'll take a look at it.

It's astonishing...when I think that this isn't/wasn't a Lyme symptom because I've never heard of anyone else having it, WRONG! My nose problems started in the early 90s; my ENT knew I had recurring infections that didn't respond really well to oral abx, but he didn't know what else to do for me. The one time I was brave enough (I hate anything near my nose) to let him do a culture, his office mistakenly sent it out as a throat culture, so all we knew from that was that it wasn't strep. Finally he gave me an rx for Cleocin and told me to dissolve a capsule in a bottle of Ocean nasal spray and use that. It did work better. I still don't know if it is/was staph, but the new nasal spray regimen is, 1 300mg clindamycin (Cleocin), 6 drops Lotrimin solution, and a pinch of baking soda in a bottle of saline spray, to be used twice a day. This is geared toward the fungal aspect they're now finding causes a lot of sinus infections, but it is still a localized treatment. My symptoms are burning, itching, pain in one side of the nose and sometimes the area between the nose and the throat. Like someone's raking it with a flaming rake. No running, in fect it's stuffy. My guess is of course it's the same problem.

Carol,

I started serrapeptase last Thursday. On Friday and Saturday I felt quite ill, I swear it felt like I was herxing, the pains in my knees/hips/hands was excruciating and very off balance at times, a very strange kind of headache.

After reading your post tonight I realize that today for the first time in a long time, my sinuses are not quite so stuffy, I am breathing easier, the usual burning/stinging inside my nose is almost gone. Although my ears have a swooshing sound and my eye vision on Friday/Saturday was quite blurry, much better today.

I plan on continue taking it, interesting about being helpful for sinuses b/c my daughter who has sinus problems and has hearing problems is also going to start using it. Will have to ask her how she is doing. Take care.

Corinne
