Hey Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could clue me in to what some white growths might be on the back of my throat.

This is not the first time they have appeared. I have probably gotten them about 8 times in the past couple of years. They are like pussy looking growths that come staright out of my tonsils. I have been to my regular HMO idiot doctor at least 3 times to have her look at them, and told her I had been exposed to mono and my mono screen always came back negative. She never even told me that mono is caused by epstein barr. I just found that out on my own like I have had to for every other mdical relatated thing. Also, its not strep throat. The first time it happened I had just gotten off of abx and thought it might be thrush, but I dont think it is.

My glands have been swollen for weeks, really swollen and when I woke up yesterday, they were not swollen anymore but my throat is now really painfull and my tonsils are covered in whatever that is.

Any thoughts??? anything would be appreciated. Thanks

I always thought that white spots on the tonsils indicated infection.

You can ease a sore thoat by gargling with saltwater that is the same concentration as the salt in your body (normal saline solution).

Recipe:
8 oz. water
one half teaspoon salt

Leave the cup by the sink, and whenever you go past, gargle. This is soothing.

You don't want to make it stronger, because then it will leach fluid from the mucosa.
NOT soothing.

You can also try one of those spray anesthetics for sore throats, from the drugstore. But the effect doesn't last long.

Also, have you tried using hydrogen peroxide in your ears? You pour in a couple drops, and let it fizz and bubble for a couple minutes, then turn head and let it drain, using a tissue.

This loosens wax, and more importantly, kills any bacteria in the ear canal. It can help stave off an infection in the eustacian tubes.

The bubbling is quite an interesting sensation.
I use a Q-tip to soak up any peroxide that's left in the ear canal.

Hope this helps.
Carol

Is it thrush-a yeast infection of the throat? Do a google for thrush. You'd think most ducks could easily spot thrush but when I went to the ER with a horrific sore throat the doc there didn't recognize it. I told him I had Lyme and was on ketek. He offered me an injection of a corticosteroid which I explained to him was contraindicated with Lyme. Then he suggested Zithromax. Never did the simple idea of thrush pop into his duck brain.

For yeast problems my LLMD told me drink lots of water-like 3 quarts a day. Also, Mycelex lozengers. If it gets too bad I'm supposed to stop abx for a bit and take diflucan.

Google thrush-I think there's something about if you scrape off the white spots it's red underneath- I'm not sure, check it.

A throat culture and sensitivity would be very helpful to determine what pathogen is the cause (viral, bacterial, fungal)in order that the RIGHT med. be prescribed to cure this.

Here's some info. that may be of interest:

Many patients are frightened when they see white spots on the tonsils. This is perfectly O.K. These are the dead white cells and dead bacteria that accumulate in the holes of the tonsils called crypts. Here the tonsils are just doing their job.

Dr. Grossan's Ear, Nose and Throat Consultant Pages
http://www.ent-consult.com/throat.html

Tonsillitis is a disorder involving inflammation of the tonsils. There are two tonsils, situated on either side of the back of the throat and they ***form part of the body's immune system.***

They, like the rest of the immune system, contain special cells to trap and kill bacteria and viruses travelling through the body. When the main site of infection is within the tonsils they swell, become red and inflamed and may show a surface coating of white spots.
http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/tonsillitis.htm

How can we diagnose Tonsilitis ?
Diagnosis is made on the basis of clinical symptoms. Inspection of the mouth and throat shows enlarged, visible tonsils. They are usually reddened and may have white spots on them.

The lymph nodes of the jaw and neck may be enlarged and tender to touch. A culture of the tonsils maybe taken to identify bacterial infection.

How can Tonsilitis be treated ?

Self care Gargle with warm saline or salt water (1 teaspoon in a glass of water). Use a cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier in the room where you spend the most time. Avoid acidic drinks , cigarette smoke or spicy food.

Paracetamol or paracetamol syrup (e.g. Calpol) can relieve symptoms. Soothing lozenges can help by keeping the mouth and throat moist and more comfortable. Sometimes ice cream can help.

If your throat is very painful, confine yourself to fluids, including milkshakes and soups. A cold pack should be applied to the throat at two-hourly interval during the day. The throat may be gargled several times daily with lemon juice. Gargle made from the fenugreek seeds is very effective in severe cases.

Do's and Dont's

Keep your (and your child's) distance from anyone with Tonsilitis or a sore throat. Do not share utensils, drinking glasses, toothbrushes, etc., with anyone who has Tonsilitis or a sore throat. Wash your (and your child's) hands frequently. Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and teach your children to do the same.

Thanks for the replies, I did once ask my doctor if this could be thrush (because this is not the first time this has happened) and she said she didn't think so. I have another app. today with some weekend doctor through my evil HMO.

I am going to demand that it be cultured for as many things as possible, not just strep, which I already know its not. I think it may be epstien barr but I just don't know. The wierd thing is how swollen my glands have been, and as soon as these painful spots showed up, the swelling in my glands went way down. IS theer anything else I should have the doctor test?

When i went to the ER with thrush a culture was done and came back negative but i didn't request to check for thrush. You probably need to specifically ask for that.

Ivebeentricked,

to minimize the number of brutal, and 'death-card' dirty tricks by hmo doc and hmo play on you, consider the following and other, similar sites as in the following:

hi, thrush is uncommon in aadults , however those of us on long term abx may be suseptable to it. if it is indeed thrush , see if your dr will prescribe nystatin Pure powder and gargle with it before swallowing
cut out all sugar and do a low carb diet for a couple weeks because yeasts feed ofdf any sugar in the body . Ive also been told that people with lyme often feel a little better on a low carb diet
peppermint helps kill yeast in some cases as well

Hello tricked,

Another possibility to consider:
the white things in your tonsils may be a combination of food, dead cells and other particles that get trapped in your tonsils. They often become a source of chronic low grade infection. Especially in those who have decreased ability to combat infection, which is the case for many, if not most Lyme patients.

My daughter has had Lyme for the past 12 years and for most of this time she had this problem. She would have large white globs that left crater-like holes in her tonsils when they came out. They have a very bad odor. Her tonsils were more prominent than average, although I'm not sure this is always the case. Compare yours to others and see if they stick out alot more than others.

Nobody was concerned about them years ago, and we were assured it was nothing to worry about. However recently her LLMD saw them and sent her directly to the ENT to have a tonsilectomy. He explained that they were chronically infected, and needed to come out before continuing her Lyme protocol.

If possible see an ENT (ear, nose and throat specialist) for diagnosis. If this is causing low grade infection, it hinders your ability to conquer the LD. I'm sure you know how important it is to give yourself every edge possible in fighting LD.

God Bless,
Dee

I've had them since 1988 when I got epstein barr. I called them pus pockets. It's ironic, but since I've been diagnosed with lyme and on treatment, they haven't been around. Mine grew in so rapidly and so much that I used to dip peroxide in a q-tip to get them out. My ent called them cryptic tonsils and said they could laser my tonsils out. They haven't been around lately, so maybe they phased themselves out.

Good luck -

Cigi
