My 8 year old son has no idea what the symptoms are for lymes disease, but he has un uncanny way of alarming me with his explanatins of how he's feeling. The more I read, the more suspitious I become.
He was bit by a tick 2 years ago, had the bulls-eye and was treated. Now, he's been sick for 4 months. He's been on amox. for 36 hours because he tested positive for strep. He's not getting better. In his words, "he can't see colors as well as he did before, his temples are tingling, his jaw hurts, he has a stabbing pain in his ear, he has a brick in his stomach..." I told him to keep me updated on how he feels, but yikes!
Thanks for the good links. I always research and will read as much as I can. You say to find a lyme-literate Doctor. Our doctor put our son on Amox. for one month. If he's better at the end of that month, can't I assume he's okay? He also said at the end of that treatment we could see an infectious disease specialist, should we wait and see, or take measures to see that specialist now? Thank you, thank you, thank you for your help.

Question 1: NO
Question 2: Pass on the ID "specialist"

If your son got bit 2 yrs ago, one month of abx is not going to cure him.

ID docs are notorious for NOT believing in chronic Lyme. At best, he/she will treat for one month. Then you're left to fend for yourselves again.

You're doing a good job, MOM! Keep it up! You're asking all the right questions!

here's a lyme symptoms list:

1. Unexplained fevers, sweats, chills, or flushing
2. Unexplained weight change--loss or gain
3. Fatigue, tiredness, poor stamina
4. Unexplained hair loss
5. Swollen glands: list areas____
6. Sore throat
7. Testicular pain/pelvic pain
8. Unexplained menstrual irregularity
9. Unexplained milk production: breast pain
10.Irritable bladder or bladder dysfunction
11.Sexual dysfunction or loss of libido
12.Upset stomach
13.Change in bowel function-constipation, diarrhea
14.Chest pain or rib soreness
15.Shortness of breath, cough
16.Heart palpitations, pulse skips, heart block
17.Any history of a heart murmur or valve prolapse?
18.Joint pain or swelling: list joints_____________
19.Stiffness of the joints, neck, or back
20.Muscle pain or cramps
21.Twitching of the face or other muscles
22.Headache
23.Neck creeks and cracks, neck stiffness, neck pain
24.Tingling, numbness, burning or stabbing sensations, shooting pains
25.Facial paralysis (Bell's Palsy)
26.Eyes/Vision: double, blurry, increased floaters, light sensitivity
27.Ears/Hearing: buzzing, ringing, ear pain, sound sensitivity
28.lncreased motion sickness, vertigo, poor balance
29.Lightheadedness, wooziness
30.Tremor
31.Confusion, difficulty in thinking
32.Diffculty with concentration, reading
33.Forgetfuiness, poor short term memory
34.Disorientation: getting lost, going to wrong places
35.Difficulty with speech or writing
36.Mood swings, irritability, depression
37.Disturbed sleep-too much, too little, early awakening
38.Exaggerated symptoms or worse hangover from alcohol

Hi Mik,

I live in WI. as well and sent you an e-mail for a doc referral. Your son has lyme, little doubt, and little doubt that 30 days of doxy won't even make a dent in his illness.

My son's symptoms went on for 3 months before he started receiving adequate treatment. He's now going on his 5th month of treatment with IV abx. Feel free to e-mail me. There are other WI. posters here as well. WI. is one of the most endemic states for lyme in the entire nation.

another thing to keep in mind and why an llmd is so important is that your son may also have co-infections that are causing his symptoms...amoxy may not even be the best antibiotic if he has these co-infections...LLMDS usually test for and treat for the co-infections because they are so common.
Most docs (even ID docs) have no clue about lyme, let alone the other co-infections.
