After 10 months of abx I finally got a vaginal yeast infection. It is making me miserable, lots of burning and irritation plus some itching. I'm wondering how my fellow female Lymies have dealt with this.

I've been taking probiotics twice a day since starting antibiotics. I read in a natural health book to use tampons saturated with acidophilus & water. I tried that and it seemed to help at first. After I felt better I stopped and then the infection got much worse.

I tried douching with betadine but that made it even worse. Tonight I bought some monistat and will try that. It also came with vulvar cream which seems to be calming the intense burning.

How do you get rid of a yeast infection while on antibiotics?

I've only had that problem once in the past 4 1/2 yrs, thank goodness! I follow a really strict diet MOST of the time!

But yes, I just went to WalMart and bought some Monistat.

I'm not sure if it'll work, it's been a while since I tried. You could try cutting out all sugars, fruit included and do the creams and or the liquid acidophilus saturated tampon. Eating a bunch of plain yogurt couldn't hurt.

There's something about changing the Ph in your system that helps with the yeast problem. Worth a shot anyway.

Barring that, I've taken Nizoral with ABX in the past, but not in quite some time. It does react with certain ABX and can't be used with them all.

I was sytemic at the time and had to come off the ABX while getting things under control. I've also had good luck with the homoepathic ones, but also while off treatment.

Sorry, that may be no help, I'm sure someone else with better info will show up soon and actually be helpful.

Hi Hats
No Carb diet is a Must-just doing
that Will help a bunch--this diet
is a long term thing-- Look at it
as change in the way you eat.
There are many iles in the super
market I have not been down in
years-so I dont tempt my self.
--Nystatin powder by far
worked Best for me. Nystatin
pills dont even come close to
working as well as the powder.
I could feel it start working
in hours.
I herxed like crazy in one day
-Lasted a few days-then I started
getting Much better- fast and long-
The powder usually must be ordered-
It can be a hassle to get-but well
worth it. And as far as bang for
the buck it is much better also.
The powder is mixed into a glass
of cool distilled water.
Swish around in mouth for a while
and swallow--It works from top
to bottom. The solution can be
used in other places with
good results.I know of no bad
side effects except for herx.
Dont know about interactions.
If you are taking nystatin pills
let them disolve in you mouth.
Also do some type of clense.
I used to work at a health
food store--there is a clense
it comes in a purple and lyme
green box-2 bottles of capsulse.
It costs about $25
I will get you the name.
Start the clense when you dont
have to be around people
for three days- the funk that
comes out of your skin is
unbelevible--Every body at
the store did it-
Huge store -It kind
of became store policy -
that if you where doing
this clense you could not
work because they would smell
so bad--Have to take 5 showers
a day-not kidding--
I did try difulcan--it worked-
but for me the nystatin powder
was Way Better- not even a race.
And Much cheaper too.
The powder Must be Refiderated-
-If it is not cold when they
hand it to you-It is no good.
For sure-no dought.
It will spoile in hours
or less. Think of it as
fradgle as ice cream.
Also get some pills to use
when you are not at home.
They do not have to be fridged.
It worked so well for me-
I feel it will for you too.
Also Hats I went out into the
Hot Texas sun for 2 hours today
and I am not burned to a crisp-
I dont even feel burned at all
I did have full-Sun Gear on.
So things may be going well
in this area.--Jay--

Thanks for the replies so far. I probably should have mentioned in my post that I have been on a strict antiyeast diet for 10 months. There is not much left to cut out! No fruit, sugar, grains, yeast....
I did cheat and eat some fruit & a tiny piece of cake just before the infection started but generally I follow this diet 99.5%

Any other experiences with Nystatin? Is it a prescription med? Do I have to stay on it?

I recently switched to Plaquenil & Biaxin, Plaquenil changes the pH of something but the infection started while I was still on Tetra.

Nystatin is a prescription med, although it's one of the older ones and if I'm not mistaken, less likely to have untoward side effects.

I have a friend that stayed on it for years. Although, i think that was a personal choice. (I forgot about that when I posted last night.)

I also forgot about the Herx from the yeast die-off that groovy2 mentioned. It happened right away and lasted about 3 days and I felt fantastic afterward. (The yeast had been mimicking all my lyme symptoms.)

I had done this with pau d'arca tea. I wouldn't recommend that without getting information from someone that knows if that's a safe and/or good idea though. I know neither only that someone suggested it 10 years ago and I was completely desperate, so did it.

I've taken Nystatin for the entire 4 1/2 yrs. It doesn't cause any of the problems that Diflucan causes. I think it works only on the gut and doesn't affect anything else.

I think it's a must for long termers.

Vaginal yeast infection-my preference is the one dose monistat-looks like a little egg. I keep one on hand.

You need to continue the anti-yeast diet and add antifungals like garlic, grapefruit seed extract etc available at health food stores. You also need to take probiotics 20 min before meals and 2hrs away from abx. I would double your current dose.

Increase low carb fiber and drink lots of water.

If you have to eat a sweet do so after a meal not by itself.

Diflucan is very effective but hard on the liver.

The only thing that has ever actually gotten rid of a yeast infection for me is Diflucan and a cream. To just get rid of this one, you don't need to be on Diflucan permanently. Just one dose can clear an infection.

As far as creams go, it takes longer, but I've found the 3 day or 7 day creams work better than the 1 day creams.

For the longterm, you may want to consider adding an anti-fungal, either a medicine or herbs. It could also just be a localized infection that won't repeat. They can be "encouraged" by wet bathing suits, pantyhose, tight workout clothes, and etc.

Please bear with me - lyme fog and can't remember names. I did take a prescription - probably Diflucan.

What did calm some of the 'ouchies' was tea tree oil suppositories. You can get them at the health food store. Keep them in the fridge. Antifungal so it cools but also helps to heal.

Another natural antifungal remedy is putting a clove of garlic 'up there'. You have to be careful tho. The garlic has to be a whole clove and should not have any cuts in the flesh, or the oil released will create a burning sensation....

What herbs could I try?

I tried using tampons saturated with probiotics. After that didn't work I tried douching with betadine. After doing that 2 days in a row, redness, irritation and swelling got extreme.

It began to subside after using monistat 3. There was still redness & swelling in the morning but as the day went on there was great improvement. I did the 3 rd one last night.

I'm not sure if I can stop now or if I should swith to monistat 7, maybe every other day for a while.

I will increase my dose of probiotics.

Hats,

I haven't noticed a difference between Monistat and others brands. They are all pretty similar I believe.

You may need to use an oral like Diflucan, just in case it's not a localized infection.

Personally, if it isn't gone within 24 hours of the last Monistat 3, I would go to a doctor to make sure it is actually yeast.

This may be a controversial solution but it has helped me tremendously.

I douche with 2 tbls. of apple cider vinegar to 2 quarts of water.

I tried Monistat but couldn't get lasting relief. The vinegar (apple cider) douche works quickly. If you are very irritated externally it might burn a little - I don't know.

I have been dealing with Chronic yeast infections for years now. For me diflucan once a week helps to keep it in check as well as watching the diet....

Natren makes a great acidophillus suppsiotry that when used with their oral acidophillus works well to keep the infection from reoccuring.
