I removed a deer tick from my wife and the next day the doctor gave her two doxycycl hyc tabs (1 dos). I have read other places that she should be taking antibiotics for two or three weeks. She has the classic bulls-eye circle around the bite. Please send me a reliable website that could answer my questions.

YIKES! Find another dr ASAP! She needs antibiotics for at least 6 wks and it needs to be AT LEAST 400mg per day. If she's a large person, even more...up to 600mg.

The reason for the 6 wks is that the Lyme spirochetes replicate every 3-5 wks, so you need to be taking abx during that time to make sure you get them all killed out.

If even one survives, you'll be really sorry you didn't take meds long enough to kill them out and at the correct dosage.

I don't know of any sites better than this one. There is also information in the box to the left of this screen. Click on the online library, etc for more information.

Hi Hosea
the bullseye bruse is a Very good sign
for infection of Lyme disease.
This is a Very Serious disease.
A few weeks of abx is not long enough.
There are many people on this site
who started off like you--and did not
get treatment for long enough or strong
enough-- I have had Lymes for 19 years
now--I saw the bulls eye bruse--I did
not know what I was-- You do- you are
Very lucky- If you get good treatment
--NOW-- you can kill it-
Time is not on your side--we are talking
days not weeks. If I told you what I
have been threw over the last 19 long
years--It would scare the hell out of you.
Knowing what I do now--I would take
doxicycline for 6 to 8 months-500-
to 600 mg a day-- some may say this
is excessive- but -
if only one of these germs servives-
It WILL ruin your life-- the side effects
from doxi are Nothing compaired
to Lyme disease. You do not want your
wifes life to be like mine.
Good luck to you--Jay--

I have had Lyme for a few fews, so I would like to think I know a little bit about it. Yes, long antibiotic treatments can be, and usually are, required. HOWEVER, if caught only a few days after the initial bite, sometimes only 200mgs of Doxycycline is on the protocol. This actually PREVENTS the disease.

Here is an explaination from a website:

According to a new study, a single 200-milligram dose of the antibiotic doxycycline can prevent the development of Lyme disease--if it's given within 72 hours of a tick bite.

This type of treatment may be warranted for people bitten by ticks in areas where the incidence of Lyme disease is high, concludes an editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine. In 1999, nine out of ten reported cases of the disease occurred in nine states--Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin.

A 14- to 21-day regimen of doxycycline is already recommended for preventing development of Lyme disease after symptoms occur.

Hosea,
Please, Please read the sites that Lymetoo has posted.

You only have one chance to treat early and aggressive.

The Drs. on www.ilads.org website are the Drs. who are in the trenches treating the disease.

You have come to a great place for information and encouragement, you will not find a group of more caring people.

Best Wishes
Cindy
