I have been prescribed a combination of 3 milograms of rocephrine and 1 oral dose of flagyl per day. Is flagyl normally given routinely or just added if complications arise. Please answer. I have just begun this treatment and have some doubts.

Hi there- as others will probably reply...here's my 2 cents...

In studies, Ceftin (the oral cousin of Rocephin)- has been shown to convert the spirochets quickly to cystic forms (do a search on this & lots of info. will turn up). The ABX class which Flagyl falls in has been shown in labs to BREAK UP the cystic Lyme. Therefore, in case your Iv medication turns the Lyme into cysts-which seems likely- Flagyl should help break up the cysts.

I was on oral Ceftin for many months & did seemingly well. Was not on Flagyl. When I went off Ceftin I got very, very ill again within a few days. No doubt in my mind the cysts can back out when the Cefitn was cleared of my blood (again, lab studies have shown this to be the case- it is not my opinion per say). Therefore- it is really good you are on Flagyl with that IV.

Word of caution: Watch your stomach- Flagyl can be very hard on the gut- how much are you on? You should be taking periodic breaks from it. And taking oral probiotics.

All the best,

-Sarah

Flagyl can cause massive herxheimers....

but....I have seen those that did ONLY Rocephin....and hated the time immediately afterward...because of the cyst form coming out.

With flagyl you may also suffer from neuro stuff...just because of the drug...and because it will hit the cyst form in your brain, etc..it has a VERY small molecule and gets in there deep.

I took Tinidazol (instead of Flagyl) and went up to 2.2 g/day.

It can be 'fun'.
