usually caused by meds, some abx, all antidepressants, antihistamines, heart medications. depending on neuralgia to nerves of the face 5th and 7th cranial nerves the innervation to the salivary glands, parotid, submandibular, lingual, buccal, sublingual and also tear ducts can be affected. this is a major problem in Sjorgen's syndrome, 90% in woman 30-50 and effects most sweat glands. must drink lots of water not soda because the saliva actually protects the teeth from getting decay because it washes the plaque off the teeth.also xylitol candy drops stimulate saliva flow without cavities. what meds are you on?

Thanks for the explaination. I looked up sojern(sp) syndrome on google.
I was a little alarmed because the other symptom seem to aply to me. But I doubt it due to other symptoms that I have.
First, I am male - not that this would eliminate the possibility. Second, part of the lyme symptoms that I have are facial twitching and scalp tingling at times. Although my wife doesn't notice it, my speech is affected at times.
I have noticed that my front bottom teeth seem to be darkening around the gums since the Lyme onset.

the dry mouth is probably a lyme symptom or herxing symptom, but all auto immune diseases have the same symptoms, you don't have sjorgen's syndrome just probably lyme. you should go to the dds to check it the brown stain is the start of decay of just stain, if you can scrap it off with your fingernails then it is probably stain from abx. like i said you must protect the teeth since the natural immunity to them is gone aka saliva. you can use artificial saliva, fluoride rinses and gels, and xylitol drops to increase saliva flow.' after eating always brush so no bacteria linger on the teeth very important. once lyme under control then the saliva should return.

Lazarus, have you seen an endocrinologist or had adrenal, Thyroid, and other hormonal tests? What about an ANA and test(s) for Sjogrens?
Doc, is there an age when it becomes futile to use ACT or other Fluoride rinses? Can too much be harmful?

foggy: the chanceof it being from sjorgen's is minimal at best, mostly from lyme. no age on fluoride with dry mouth. keeps down bacteria count, protects teeth from cavities and reduces sensitivity to cold. should use rx flouride gel or liquid stannous fl is a little better , the tin ions keep the sensitivity away. bettyg is correct lots and lots of water, no juice, no sugar, especially no sodas even diet because the co2 from the cabonation does the damage in sodas along with the sugar so its a 2 fold no-no.

I have gotten dry mouth as well it seems to come and go. Drink lots of water and no soda and get some special gum from your dentist. It stimulates the saliva production really for Sjorgens but works none the less.
As for the brown stains around teeth I had this too noticed it really bad while on Doxy. Went to the dentist cause I thought it was decay it was just stains. I go to the dentist every 3 months now. Amazing this was the hygenists' idea, I like her she is even a little Lyme literate. Telling me last visit that Lyme can cause dry mouth.

I have used Biotene mouthwash and gum as well as artificial saliva. I used something called "Salivert" or something close to that.
The local drug store carries it without a script. It is a clear, thick gel that helps your mouth remain moist.
Now back on treatment and addressing autoimmune issues, that is resolving.
