Okay. I don't have asthma. But last night woke up with a slight cough and then all of a sudden couldn't get any air in my lungs.

I grabbed hubby's inhaler, did two puffs, and after what seemed like forever (but actually probably a minute or two) could breathe.

Been treating Lyme for 2 1/2 years. Started Doxy for first time on Thursday. Could this be some type of respiratory herx? Does that happen?

this exact thing happened to me and it turned out to be gerd gastr espohogeal reflux aka acid reflux

It can make your throat feel like its closing up and you feel like its an asthma attack. the inhaler works because its relaxing the swelling caused by the acid in the esophagous
ask the doctor for something for acid reflux
oh and acid reflux is pretty common when taking doxycycline . it does help some to take the doxy with meals , dont take it on an empty stomach . i found that the addition of prilosec or another acid reducer was quite helpful as well

Do you have GERD? ( And no, you dont have to feel anything to actually have it)

Its very very common to cause this at night. You can reflux into the back of your throat, and get all kinds of not so nice symptosm, from

waking up with no breath ( like you did) to chronic ear pain, throat pain, and even sleep apnea.

I've never been told I have GERD. But I have heard about GERD causing asthma/sleep problems as one of my adult sons has that going on.

Yes, I take doxy with meals. Tummy seems okay so far (using probiotics a couple hours away from doxy doses).

Oh, I should add that today my chest/lungs feel sore, like a sore muscle. You know, like when we would return to school after a 3 month vacation and have to run laps. Our lungs weren't used to the work out and felt sore for a couple of days? That kind of feeling.

Hi : I have exactly the problem you are talking about, I also have acid reflux though so all the posts about that are quite true acid reflux can cause a type of asmatic feeling. However 2 or 3 of my herxs were just like you described, it is very scary. I was so freaked a couple of times I took off up to emerg, I thought I was never going to catch my breath, but it was ok, now I breathe deep ( if I can) and try so hard to calm down and and it goes away eventually Good Luck !!

Hi,

When I told my doc I needed my inhaler when sick, he told me to keep close by for herxing. He said don't call me if you are wheezing, you should be at the hospital.
