Lost my sense of smell before I was a teenager. Doctors haven't been able to explain why.

Started taking abx 3 months ago. Yesterday for the first time in 40 years I smelled fresh cut grass and blossoms from trees. Went to a supermarket and smelled the spice area near the spice racks.

It's wonderful just to have a few moments of being able to smell, at least some things.

That is GREAT!!!! I can't imagine how it must have felt to be able to smell again...I am sure eating will be a lot more fun now too.

I have read that a poor sense of smell can be an early symptom of Parkinson's.

25 years ago, I had two friends who both admitted to a poor sense of smell. They later developed Parkinson's.

Hmmm....I wonder if Lyme had anything to do with that?

Congratulations!!! That must be a such an overwhelming feeling. I'm so happy for you.

My grandmother who had Lyme all her life but never found out as long as she lived, lost her sense of smell also in her 40s. She never got it back until she died at 89. Sometimes I had been asking myself if she would have gotten it back with abx treatment but then I thought that after such a long time it wouldn't have been possible, anymore.

You just proved me wrong. Go on like that.

Not this winter but last one I caught awful head/chest cold. Bad enough but one morning I noticed the coffee tasted awfully weak. Then - when I went to put Vicks on my chest I thought, Vicks never loses its smell no matter how old it is...what gives? Apparently the cold virus had settled in the nasal track and infected the olfactory nerves. I could stick my nose in a whole can of coffee and smell nothing. Consequently I could taste nothing - and I mean NOTHING. I don't think anyone believes how disheartening this was. Panicky. My doctor said she only knew of 2 people with this - me and one other! Yes, it gradually came back, thank the lord. We didn't know if it would, if the nerves had been destroyed. But what an awful, awful thing. It took weeks, but I'll never forget that night I smelled my spaghetti sauce cooking again. As a 21-yr Lyme patient I wonder if there was some connection.

So happy for you. It has been said that the sense of smell is linked to our memory in a stronger way than the other senses.

What our babies smelled like, the smell of flowers on a special occasion etc...

Brighty that is so wonderful. It is a shame that the rest of us have probably taken that blessing for granted. Thanks for reminding us how great that ability is!
