Has anyone taken doxycycline with flagyl at the same time? I'm taking 600mg doxy now.
What doses of each have you had experience with?

Any thoughts so appreciated!

Hi !!!

Yep, I've taken (still taking) them together and it seems to help me.

I was taking 700 mg of doxy and 1000 mg of Flagyl. That much of both made me very sick ... crampy stomach and all the pleasantries that go with it (if you know what I mean).

I kept taking the 700 mg of doxy and went down to 500 mg of flagyl ( 250 mg, twice a day) and didn't have any of the stomach/intestinal problems.

Man, you have to be REALLY careful about the sun taking that much doxy. You're one of a very few people that I've heard of that could "stomach" that much doxy. I know of myself and 1 other person that has been able to take that much doxy.

At those levels, however, it does seem to cross the blood-brain barrier; I say that because when I'd been on that much for 6 weeks, my CNS symptoms started getting better. After I added the Flagyl, my symptoms got better still.

I've had to cut back on the doxy for the summer (down all the way to 300 mg per day) but I've just increased the Flagyl to 750 mg per day & am going to see how that works ... if my symptoms stay "tolerable" and if the stomach/intestinal problems don't come back.

It's been a good combination for me, I hope it works for you.

I was also taking 500 mg of Zithromax with the massive doxy and flagyl, but my doc has just stopped the Zith and added Ketek.

What are your main Lyme symptoms ..... if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks so much for sharing!

I just increased doxy to 300mg twice a day a few days ago (Dr. Harris from Igenex recommended I do this). I don't have any stomach upsets...yet (I hope not). I did have a small break out on my skin, but it doesn't seem to be continuing to happen today.

My main symptoms are problems with strength in my legs- walking and balance. The doxy has recently made it a lot worse! I'm hoping it's a quick herx-- if there is such a thing.

What symptoms have improved for you?? How long after doxy and flagyl did you see impovement?

Thx,
SAK

My main symptoms (the ones that finally sent me to the doctor) were dizziness (not vertigo) and, when the dizziness got really bad, I would get VERY confused. My "dizziness" is best described as the feeling that my eyes and my brain weren't synchronized and if there was very much going on that took eye-brain coordination, I just couldn't handle it (like, driving a vehicle would make it HORRIBLE, riding my horse was bad and sometimes walking was even tough).

Be sure to take a good probiotic about 2-3 hours after taking the abx. I take Klaire Labs, "Ther-Biotic Complete". Whichever probiotic you take, make sure it has to be refrigerated or you're probably just buying "dead bugs". If you can just walk into the health food store and pull it off the shelf, you're wasting your money (even if it's half-price and the original price was 10 cents a bottle LOL).

I have really been seeing an improvement. I've been getting treatment for 6 months now and my "dizziness" has gone from "8-10 on the Richter Scale" to 2-3. That means, I am still going to work every day and keeping my insurance and being able to pay for the treatment, etc.

Let me know how you do on the doxy and flagyl combo. I hope it works for you.

When were you diagnosed with Lyme? I finally got a diagnosis (I FINALLY found a Dr. who knew what tests to do, knew where to send them and they came back with a positive LDA and Western Blot)in December, 2004, after 2.5 years of getting worse & worse. I started out just getting the "dizzy" feeling when I was driving, and it didn't seem bad enough to take time off to go to the Dr. But when it got so bad that I really COULDN'T drive, I got serious about seeing a Dr. I went to my, then GP who sent me to 2 ENT's, 2 neurologists, a cardiologist and an opthalmologist. I saw a psychiatrist on my own (just so the other doctors couldn't say it was "all in my head" .... an end-around on my part LOL).

I finally found an endocrinologist/internist who knew his butt from a hole in the ground AND didn't think I was just a hypochondriac from the get-go.

Most doctors in Alabama don't think Lyme Disease is in Alabama ........ huh, it just won't cross the state lines, I guess? Alabama is too scary for even bacteria? Really, most just don't know about it and it isn't part of their differential diagnosis. Too bad for most people in AL that have it ..... and I think there are LOTS!!!

Keep in touch!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, I forgot to mention, I tried taking 800 mg of doxy. With the probiotic, my stomach could handle it, but if the sun just TOUCHED my skin (even through the car windows) my skin would turn truly purple and develop sores wherever the sun had touched me --- like being burned with a cigarette. It was horrible.

I'm impressed that Dr. Harris, at IGeneX, suggested the doxy? How did you manage to get his input? That really is impressive !!!

I took doxy at the beginning for 2 months, started at 200 mg/day then went to 400 then 600. At the end my gut hurt a lot all the time , besides I started zithro and mepron to treat babesia. Make sure to have food in the stomach before taking doxy, to take with a full glass of liquid and do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking doxy. I burned my esophagus by failing to take it with enough liquid to flush it thru the esophagus.

I found out about Lyme about 4 weeks ago.
Started abx 3 weeks ago. I've been feeling real yucky for the past week. Walking is soo much worse. I understand it's probably a herx, but I don't like it at all!! I wish there was a way to shorten this period of feeling awful.

Dr. Harris (IGenex) spoke with my Dr to interpret my results. They went through my history and added the positive test results to be sure of the diagnosis.

Now, I hope to start on flagyl soon, as soon as I can get it. I'll do 250mg twice a day. It sounds like that would be best with doxy 300mg, twice a day.

I will post any news on that. Feel free to contact me via email too...I cannot access yours from here.
