Hello, I am new here. I have had Lyme (with neuro involvment, related arthritis, and the full slew of symptoms) for about eight years However, the past two have been wicked bad. My IGeneX test is positive, too, which helps because I have one doc who thinks that I cannot get Lyme and do not have it. I was on Doxycycline for a while, like eight months. However, I had constant migraines the entire time, so it was switched to minocycline, which I stopped on Friday. I also tried a short stint with Cefuroxime which I terminated because A) the pharmacy had no more than four days worth and B) It is very expensive and my doc thought it probably would not work, and C) Another doc was concerned about me just taking a bunch of abxs. I am going to see a LLMD in a bit and just want to know what to expect. Amoxicillin will not help me, because I am immune to it now.
I am a student on summer break, or will be shortly. What is the chance that the doc will give me an IV? I think I, presonally, would prefer that as I know people who have had the best success with it. I also take a ton of vitamins and whatnot, that adding more orals is a pain in the derrier. Can I ask for the IV stuff? If I go with orals and then it is decided that IVs are needed, I go to boarding school, so while I could do IVs there, (it is okay, people do!), having to have a PICC or port-a-cath inserted would not be good. I need to be healthy as soon as I can and I AM SICK OF BEING SICK!

8 months of doxy ? Wow ! I'm glad you're finally going to an LLMD.
Personally, with the length of time you've been ill, I'd do the IV. Very effective, easier on the gut, and you could still mix in some orals if need be.
There's all kinds of abx that you haven't tried yet, and I would definitely have a laundry list, length of time, mgs, etc., for your LLMD when you see him.

If it were me and it could be arranged I'd get a picc line and do an IV. Well, I find it much easier on my stomache and I know the ABX are getting into my blood stream. I had good experiences with them. Actually, it was less hassle all around for me.
I know everyone is different but I've had a few picc line and relatively no problems. (I got allergic to one of the dressings used and just switched to another.)
The only draw back was I had to cover it with plastic wrap and plastic waterproof tape to shower.
Oh, and I wore the top parts of a cut up socks on my arm, but I tried to match them to my clothes.
I hope you get to see the LLMD soon and are able to get going on a treatment that'll help. (And yes it is alright to ask for an IV. The doc may well suggest it.)
Good Luck Pollyanna.

I had a BIG problem tolerating 100mgs a day of Doxy, are other orals better? (I could tolerate 50mg Mino-but it did nothing for about five months). Or would this be more likely to propell me towards the intravenous things? thanks!

It's really trial and error, as everyone reacts differently. IV's can work wonders, but you can also get herx's from hell.
