My LLMD has suddenly taken me off Septra because my monthly bloodwork indicated my white blood cells have plummetted. Anyone else experience this?

Hey morning..

Sometimes taking antibiotics can cause a drop in the white count... not just Septra.. but other kinds as well. Going off them usually works the best to bring the white count back up.

Drink LOTS of water.

Thanks for that info guys...I've been off all ABX for five days, and I hope to get more bloodwork done tonight. My fingers are crossed that the symptoms dont rush me back into a relapse. So far, not too bad.

My WBCs run low on meds and I have to watch them.Im curious,what did your doc think was to low,if you dont mind,what was your WBc count?Thanks,Joe

I was told my WBC count was near 800, when it is supposed to be near 1800. If I remember those number correctly.

Hey NewsGuy -

Normal WBC is 4 (or 4000) count to
11 (11,000).

I know because I watch them allot.

While on abx, a poster here named
'Lish's Mom' wrote about how her daughters WBC's were chronically low and the mushroom supplement Cordyceps, a particular brand from Planetary Herbs raised her WBC's and kept them up while on abx .

You might want to search her posts and talk to Doc about it if it interests you.

This helped raise my son't low count on abx as well..

This is a naive question but I would be grateful for a reply!

Is septra a drug that can be used for Lyme?

I know it gets prescribed for UTIs (bladder infections)and also sometimes for ear infections but I had never heard of it as a Lyme drug.

Are you taking it for Lyme?

Yes, Septra is used for Lyme too. I was on Amoxicillin, etc. for nine months, but I had really hit a plateau at about 90%. I just could not get rid of the remaining weird sensations and symptoms. I switched to the Septra and within a month I was near 95%, but it dropped my White Blook Count drastically, so I had to stop and retest the blood. I find out Monday what the next step will be. From what I've heard, the Septra is pretty powerful!

Rick... I'm going to start Septra in a cpl weeks with Zithro...are you having routine bloodwork done? were there any indications that lead you to the bloodwork being drawn?

What symptoms would a low white blood cell count cause?

Bill...I don't know what the symptoms of Low White Blood Cells are...perhaps a Google search could tell us. I guess it just makes us less able to fight things off. The new routine was Septra, Ketek and Plaquenil, and it did make me feel an improvement. I do monthly bloodwork and since I've had Lyme the WBCs have been slightly low, but this was drastically lower than ever, and I guess Septra has a history of doing this. But it did seem to be quite effective. We may try to pulse it next time, a few days on, a few days off. The Ketek (and Zithro and Biaxin) have been helpful as well.
