I started heparin injections today. The first went well. The second I had a hard time getting into the skin. I use a new needle each time and inject in the abdomen.

Any tricks? I heard about the Z thing, but the RN that instructed me by phone said she has taught it, but didn't think it really worked.

I don't have this trouble with B-12 in thigh (IM).

Hi aliyalex,

I injected heparin over a period of a few months. I don't think that the ``Z'' method verses just pinching the abdomen made any difference. What did in my case was not to hesitate, but to be as swift as possible while plunging in the needle.

Oh. Are you supposed to pinch the abdomen?

Yes, you are supposed to pinch the abdomen. The ``Z'' method is a form of pinching the abdomen that kind of makes a z shape (a little hard to explain especially over the phone). I am surprised your nurse did not give instructions in person.

Anyway...it is really not a problem...all you need to do is pinch the abdomen between your thumb and index finger with one hand while inserting the needle with the other. If you are right handed you will of course have the needle in your right hand.

Hope this helps!!

That makes sense. I was just trying to insert it and it wasn't going in easily.

OK. I'll pinch tomorrow.

I live in Louisiana and the LLMD is in Missouri. I won't be back there for a few months.

Aliyalex,

I am sure you will have better luck tomorrow.

You mentioned that your LLMD is in Missouri. Is that Dr. C in Springfield?

Well at least I did do 2 injections, such as they were. And I started zith and mepron. I think I will wait a few days before I add the artemesinin.

Yes, Dr C in springfield. Thanks D

Dr. C is my Doc also.

I have been seen by another LLMD Doc in MO. but have just recently gone back to Dr. C.

Are there no LLMD in your state?
