I have been on IV abx (rocefin) and oral flagyl 500mg/day for 4 weeks now... the peripheral neuropathy in feet has become extreme this week (numbness and pain)...I am not sure if this is a herx reaction or from the flagyl. I have heard flagyl can cause nerve damage... I don't want to go off the flagyl because it supposedly attacks the cysts and lessens the risk of serious oportunistic bacterial infections, but I don't want to lose the feet either.. What do I do? The docs are really no help.

Hey infecto..

Sorry to hear you are feeling worse.

I am not familiar with Flagyl side effects... sorry.

But I wanted to mention.. a herx is a fairly normal thing to have occur in the late 3rd to 4th week.. so the timing is about right.

I will NOT say you are herxing.... because I don't know.

But it is possible. Please check with your doctor to be sure.

Hope it feels better soon!!!

Hello: Just my humble opinion, GO OFF FLagyl right away, I knew someone recently who almost lost one of their feet over these symptoms with flagyl, it can be dangerous to keep on it. I was on flagyl too it didn't do that to me but only because I couldn't stomach it, I had bad side effects from it, I was put on its cousin tinidazole, it is much better tolerated with less side effects. Talk to your doc about this. SOON! Good luck

Thank you MrsSAM

Check with your Doctor...I'm not one...but, I would drop the flagyl temporarily.

THen start it again after a few days.

Infectomatt, if you are one of the people able to do a search here, I had started a long thread about peripheral neuropathy. The search works for some and not others, maybe someone can get the link for you.

I am on Tinidazole and Ketek, and was recently diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, have it mostly in my feet and legs.

I was hospitalized with the pain, didn't know how I could go on.

That was last week, and I found that with the right pain management and a good neurologist, there can be great relief from the pain.

Hang in there, email me if you would like.

God bless.
