After treatment of lyme disease, is there any long term health problems involved ? Is lyme disease totally curable ?

I think some damage (in severe cases, like brain damage or organ damage) cannot be undone, but most can, with adequate treatment.

Here's some of the problem...
In my case anyway the ducks misdiagnosed me and put me on steroids and nsaids which only exacerbated the problem....
After initial treatment for lyme I was told I would have "residual" damage not treatable...when in fact the treatments were not strong enough or long enough and I still had an active infection......
The trick is to catch it quickly and I believe there is a 70percent chance of irradication....
Unfortunately this rarely happens.....
The only thing I could do with my knees which were devastated with arthritis/ osteo or lyme was to have them totally replaced as reconstruction never worked. I believe that is because the main problem was never addressed...the lyme infestation.
I still have some mental issues as well as physical problems depending how far from my last antibiotic regimen I get....
I'm one of the chronic persons but I keep trying..... Hopefully they'll come up with something soon.. or in my lifetime so I can get my life back.........................zman

I think with adequate and EARLY treatment, you can avoid the long term problems. Many of us here were not caught early.
Is it totally curable? Maybe....if it's caught right away and adequately treated.

There are many opinions and it really depends on who you ask. Dr.'s at Columbia will say one thing, Dr.'s at Yale will say another, & the AMA doesnt agree with European Dr.'s.
Personally, I believe that it is many times curable IF you get treatment right away and IF your immune system is in full force (ie you dont have other health problems).
Some damage cannot be undone. But that damage just depends on so many factors. What strain you have, what other tick diseases you have, treatment, your immune system, ect. ect.
There is just not a definite answer to your question.

My father finally went to the hopital the other day and they pinpointed that he has a virus. The lyme test hasnt come back yet but they are 90% sure from his signs that this is what he has. Unfortunately my father is very stubborn and has been living with these symptoms for nearly a yr and hasnt seen a doctor. I am concerned that he is now going to have problems for the rest of his life. Thank you for some of the information that has been provided for me. I just hope that we get everything figured out soon-the family is very stressed over the whole situation and I fear he will never be back to his normal self again. I guess we'll learn in time what can be done. Hopefully this time he learned his lesson that you see a doctor when ur sick! karenm9782
