Hi all- search is not working...so..

Wondering if anyone out there has taken a 'protein pump inhibitor' drug like Aciphex (usually used for stomach acid reflux..but in this case it enhances the effects of Leviquin) along with Leviquin -as recently suggested by Dr.B- guess he is doing it & now so are other LLMD's.

Just wondering how much anyone is taking on the combination, for how long, and when are the meds taken, together?

Any advice appreciated.

-Sarah

The PPI was recommended by our then-LLMD long ago (a very good guy, now deceased), but not with Levaquin -- I can't remember which abx, or whether it was a quinolone or something else.

It was prescribed to enhance absorption of the abx through the GI tract, and also to help quell the truly dreadful GI/stomach problems he had at the time. I can't remember dosages or length of time specific to the abx-enhancer effect. He took Aciphex and abx together for many years. The stomach problems are now mostly, gloriously, resolved.

I have been taking Nexium for over a year to help with GERD, absorption, etc. I have tried at times not to take one but it really makes a difference.

I am on Aciphex and just started Levaquin 500 mg twice a day. A few other antibiotics for good measure. I think it really does help with the GI problems and just upset stomach in general.

Reading that back not sure if it makes any sense at all. But hope it helps to know someone just started the same drugs.

I have taken Levaquin with many different proton pump inhibitors, and had no problems at all. make sure when you go on something like nexium, prevacid, etc. that you take your pill about 1/2 hour before food in the am.
