Hi,

My son has started Primaxin IV last Tuesday. The last couple of days, he has been much worse and I think he is having a herx.

I know if you are taking oral antibiotics and have a herx, Dr. C suggests stopping for a couple of days.

Does anyone know if taking an antibiotic break applies to IV, too? I will call his doctor tomorrow but just wanted to know if anyone has experience with this.

Thanks,
DadOf2

I would think it does, but I've never had an IV...so can't say for sure. Be sure to put a call in to the good doc first thing tomorrow.

First of all,I am so sorry your son is sick.

I was on IV Primaxin last year.I did hit bottom, big time herxing.I did go off of this for awhile, until I felt better.I suffer from terrible headaches and this sent them into overdrive...big time, plus it was my first IV abx.Yes,much worse than oral, for me at least, big leagues.

I did flush the line everyday while off IV,very important.

Yes,call the doc.I think I did a couple of holidays(off meds,),I am a light weight and they punched me pretty hard,so a holiday was my secret in holding my own and being able to continue.

Good luck, your son will get better,we are here for ya.He is lucky to have you.

I had the same question.

After the 1st week on IV, I had such bad head pressure I was unable to think or to be out of bed for more than a few hours a day. That lasted 6 days, and I was about to call Dr C to ask if I should not infuse for a day or 2, then had a couple of days of relief. I thought this meant herx was over, so didn't call Dr C.

Then Friday and Saturday the head pressure and exhaustion were bad again, but then Sunday, it lifted again. So I haven't called to ask, and I did not have to stop infusing.

How is your son? Did Dr C have him stop the infusions, or has the herx ended on its own as mine did?

I'm DadOf2's wife

Jake stopped his IV on Monday and today. He will start again tomorrow with 3 doses per day but only take 1/2 of the dose.
