Hi Team, Mepron/zithro for a month. It is so humid out I do not think I have been dry for days. I am numb in all 4 of my limbs and it is so painful. This is new and scary.
I am also exhausted from the heat.
The left side of my face goes in and out of numbing. Any and all advice is appreciated.
Blessings, Marblenose

Marblenose, Sorry to hear how uncomfortable you are and wish I could offer helpful suggestions.
I only have numbing (painful) in my right hand and left leg. It waxes and wanes and I can't really predict what makes it worse except for cold weather. The only thing that has helped me is pain medication and Neurontin.
Hope you get some relief somehow, someway soon.

The numbness is a common lyme symptom. It may be worse for several weeks after you start a new treatment due to "Herxheimer" reactions, which are due in turn to toxins released from dying lyme bacteria (so you can take heart in that-- as in, "the only good lyme bacteria is a dead lyme bacteria"!) I was resistant to taking too much pharmaceutical stuff. I did have to rsort to ibuprfen, buit that was moref or joint pain than the numbness. I felt willow bark may have helped with the numbness, and there was no question that in my case, gingko biloba helped alleviate that numbness, as well. For me the best kinds of gingko were "gingkgold" and "gingkoba". But the main thing is, .as you continue treatment it will get better, though it may take awhile! By the time I started babesia treatment the numbness was already much less pronounced; thus I think it was from lyme, not babesia. Are you still on abx for lyme, as well? Garlic is always good- in my opinion, it's almost "the more the better". I hope you are rid of the numbness soon! DaveS

Thanks for your feedback. I take the non-tradtional as well. I have central air conditioning set at 67 to make it 74 which is still just plain yucky.I am sopping wet standing still. I didn't take the zithro today. Maybe backing off for a few is a good idea. I am so grateful for this site and for all of you! Blessings, Marblenose Posts: 287 | Registered: Nov 2004

I started zith/mepron/arte 6 weeks ago. You might want to do a search for mepron buddies. At around 4 weeks I realized that my legs and torso were numb and the fatigue was intense.
I don't know if you live in the South, too, but the heat is so oppressive this year. I have an ice vest from the past that I have resorted to wearing again. The sweats and chills are intense.
I talked to my LLMD's office and was told to d/c all for a few days and restart the zith slowly. When that plateaus, slowly add mepron.
I was slow to show a reaction (which could mean it is long-standing), but then it whacked me.
I also have muscle weakness, did you?
I hope you feel some relief soon. Ilene

Google cooling vests. It saved me last summer and this year it has been very helpful, as well. I leave mine in the freezer in the garage and when I walk out of the house in the heat of the day, I slip it on.
Questron? What is that for? Thanks.

Wow! that ice vest sounds wonderful! I needed that when i was living in Texas!!
Questran is good for eliminating toxins from the body. It's hard on the stomach...but if you can tolerate it, it's good while it lasts. [It is a prescription]
Hope you guys are feeling better soon!

I had the numbness you described above.
During herx quite a bit of toxin ended up in your blood after a lot of bugs got killed. Dr Shoemaker propagated Cholestyramine to clear toxin from Lyme. He has never published any article in scientific journals (that is unfortunate) but had oral presentations on symposia (there was something in 2002).
Cholestyramine is an older drug used to lower blood cholesterol but more recently is used to accelerate toxin removal. It is commonly used in poisonous snake/spider bites. You need a prescription from your doctor.
Cholestyramine is a resin that absorbs bile so the bile cannot be reabsorbed back to the blood stream. Instead is removed from the body. Apparently Borrelia burgdorferi toxin travels together with bile. That means the liver picks it up from the blood; excrete it together with the bile into duodenum, and in untreated patient the bile AND THE TOXIN is reabsorbed back. That is why the toxin cannot be removed quickly even if your liver is doing its best.
Cholestyramine is safe but unpleasant. May cause heartburn and strong constipation. So start it slowly: one or two sachets per day. See how you respond. Initially it may be bad, but later your body might adjust to it. Give yourself time. Take ranitidine or losec for heartburn. Take laxative if constipated.
I took it 3 times a day and started improving in 10 days. If you can, take it 4 or more times a day. For some people it takes longer - several weeks, some others do not improve and require different treatment. There is also a natural product Chitosan that people say works equally well but I don't know for sure.
Just make sure that Cholestyramine doesn't interfere with other oral medication. The best is not to take other medicines one hour before cholestyramine and 3 hours after. Otherwise you risk that your other treatment might not work. It is useful to take a meal that contains fat shortly after Cholestyramine such as a scrambled egg on butter or 30 ml of vegetable oil to stimulate bile ejection. Avoid whole grains or even all grains in any forms after taking Cholestyramine as they seem to deactivate it.

I am so sorry you feel this way. If I could I would fix all of us. I am new to treatment, old to symtoms. Having a very hard time accepting and staying hopeful. You guys help me understand I am not crazy. I've been sick for soooomany years. Been treated like I am crazy. Lots of people abandoned me and abused me for being sick. Here there seems to be a language I understand, finally a place to use the language I speak silently. Thank you for being here.
