Well -- a friend with LD and Co has developed a hemorrhoid. I doubt that it's related to LD, since it seems to be so common in the adult population, but I was wondering if anyone had any experiences/observations?

It's just surprising to me that it happened so suddenly and with no apparent cause -- no recent history of constipation, lifting heavy weights, straining, family predisposition, etc. Good, high-fiber diet, lots of probiotics, and all that jazz. Did have a lot of bowel problems for many years because of LD/Co, but that cleared up about 2 years ago, except for about 2 months on the tail end of a Mepron tx several months ago.

I didn't find any links between abx, anti-inflammatories, and hemorrhoids -- does anyone know?

And -- has anyone found a good treatment for them?

BTW -- I found this site comparing all kinds of treatments: Treatments Compared Seems to be only for hemorrhoids, but it has some good links to other comparison sites for other conditions. Wish there were more of these around.

Eating iceberg lettuce, one half a head a day works well, for one week. It clears up the problem. How did I know that?

Here is an article about it:
http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1041/is_2_83/ai_n8964971

But, no pun intended, don't let this treatment take the place of a visit to the gastro for a check for colon cancer or something else serious.

This could be something that you wouldn't want to go unchecked. Colon cancer runs in my family.

My sister's gastro told her to include Romain lettuce in her diet regularly and she would never have to worry about colon cancer. We thought that was a pretty stronge statement.

Entertaining those ideas here again, should never take the place of a regular gastro check up.

What kind of fiber does your friend eat or take?

Hi ive. Fiber is lots of beans, whole wheat bread, veggies and fruit, (and romaine lettuce). There's no pain with the hemorrhoid--it's just there.

Thanks for the article link. I was tickled to see a hemorrhoid article about a person named Hind....

I agree re seeing the GI doc. Self diagnosis can be a dangerous game.

When I was first slammed by Lyme 20 yrs ago I had my one and only hemmorroid for no apparent reason. I had it surgically removed it hurt so much. For me there is a connection.

Minoucat, I too thought that Hind was funny!

I am glad to hear that your friend isn't in pain. Hemorrhoids can be quite painful.

Still, right to go to check it out with a doc that knows. Even if they don't know lyme, we still need these specialists.

I don't know if I would bring the lyme up, unless your friend feels like defending themselves all over again.

I think all of us have had enough fun defending our loved ones or selves (in a lot of your cases) to not want to go there again.

I have heard others say that they avoid talking about it. Now, it's another thing when prescriptions or treatments come in to play. Then of course you must tell all.

That is just my opinion on the subject. I have just grown tired of explaining to someone that should know about the disease.

I would ask the LLMD about the connection, though. They will be much more helpful establishing any ties between the two. Sounds like Janet empathizes, so that may be enough to satisfy that it is possible.

You probably realize all of this on your own.

I hope your friend is okay and it isn't anything serious. It sounds as though your friend eats plenty of fiber. I just wonder if there is something special about iceberg that makes it work so well?

If the hemorrhoids are cronic, then they need time to heal up.
A military doctor told me a little trick. Get a large rubber syringe and give yourself an enema each morning or when needed with luke warm water no soaps or chemicals. Cold water can cause a cramp...

This will take the strain off the rectum and allow healing to take place. The syringes can be hard to find. The prefilled ones in the drug stores are worthless. Try medical suppliers or google enema on the web lots of choices. No prescription needed...

Even if you have no problems. It is nice to "empty" before a long flight in a private plane or a long hi stress meeting at work...

With todays highly processed foods, the gut needs all the help it can get...

I take a substance called colonix which includes fiber powder to mix with water, pills to kill parasites, and a laxative tea. You can only use the pills and tea for a month and then take a week off and use them another month. It has done wonders for my h's.

If the hemorrhoid/s are external they will come down pretty quickly by dousing/soaking them in witch hazel.

Those things are awfully uncomfortable when they flare, so yes if they are a problem often they should be checked out.

I've had one for years prior to LD, and they have not gotten worse after contracting LD, for what thats worth?!

All the witch hazel I've seen has alcohol in it -- is that a problem? Is there such a thing as alcohol-free witch hazel?

Upon intense questioning, "my friend" (sorry to be so mysterious -- it isn't me, but the person with the hemorroids swore I'd die a humiliating death if I gave any hint of age or gender that might reveal identity. Funny what we worry about, isn't it. ) Anyway -- really and truly, there's been no straining, no constipation, and the diet has been high fiber and very healthy for a long time. Which makes me suspect that it's a side effect of drugs or something, rather than the traditional reasons.

Don't know if there's an alcohol free type.
Are you worried about a bleeding hemorrhoid and alcohol in an open sore?

....been there, I used it anyway without any extra discomfort. I would'nt hesitate to use it again.

My problem showed up when I was pregnant with my first child....extra pressure in my legs etc.
I do think there's an element of genetics involved here, seems to run in families....does in mine, but yes I couldn't discount circulation problems in lymies either.

~~ I can't blame your friend

I have chronic Lyme and have developed external hemorrhoids in the last couple of years. Don't know if there's any connection. Don't have constipation problems -- have always liked veggies and fruits and ate healthy foods (mostly).

Recently had a colonoscopy and the dr. tried to blame the hemorrhoids and rectal bleeding on constipation but when I told him I didn't have that problem, that I had movements several times a day, he then blamed them on too much wiping.

Can't win.

Prevention and Comfort measures - Cottonelle toilet paper (each ok day) and their wet wipes (with flare up days). They are more soothing - less irritating.

No I don't work for them. This is just my hubby's experience, as passed on to him from another hemmoroid sufferer.

He even carried a small package of them to the bathroom at work (or when traveling) b/c that cheap scratchy toilet sand paper can flare even a good day.

I only get hemorrhoids when I've taken macrolide antibiotics. For me they seemed to make my poo extremely acidic, I had terrible diarrhea and it was excrutiating every time I went to the loo. As soon as I stopped the antibiotics then the piles stopped!

I have only been diagnosed with lyme for a year but I think I have had it since 1990 and hemmorhoids have been there since the start. Acid reflux, heartburn and colon cramping have all been there from the start. For me there is a connection.

For what it's worth, I learned hemmoroids was/is a result of liver problem, like to many drugs or too much fat that the liver cannot sort through.
Drink lots of water and take milk thistle and anything else to support the liver and see what happens.
Blessings,
Marblenose

I think hemroids can be related to tick borne illness...I developed them before treatment...mine were classified as "internal" - I never had anything like this before I got sick. When I went on abx therapy it resolved and I have not had a problem since. I was scoped from both ends so I know everything looked ok except for some mild erosion in my upper stomach which the doctor never really could explain. I don't have acid reflux.

My dog developed what they call Perianal Fistulas...she got sick a month before I did. These horrible blood filled sacks formed around her rear end and would bleed when she eliminated...they have resolved completely with doxycycline treatment.

Now my husband is sick with babesia and lyme...he has had bleeding...

I think it is very much related...and in my mind think it could be babesia or ehrlichia. Of course I will never be able to prove this. Our dog tested negative to PCR testing but I don't believe blood tests anymore...

So that has been my experience...
